dig a foot or 2 deep hole and you'll be fine.......go deeper if you have summer droughts that produce little to no rain at times (unless your gonna be taking care of them)
It is...any deeper and the roots won't go down there anyway. They lioke oxygen, and the deeper you go, the less oxygen there is. Pot plants like shallow, but VERY WIDE holes. A foot deep and 10 ft wide

Yep you want width over depth , as the root system is as wide as plant is, or will get, so I have been told, and have seen a few large trees and their depth was no more than 24in, but they were 4ft wide minimum, and plants at the end were over 6 ft wide and more.....many have done large trees in smart pots so a good rule of thumb when asking this is what size are those pots and just dig a similar size hole, just remember smart pots can achieve large plants in a smaller root area due to root pruning as they are porous and allow air in better than holes in earth, either way they will do wonderful with the right soil and attention they deserve.
fuck digging buy a damn kiddy pool for $9 and grow a tree, it will take 3-4 bag of soil for a small one and as many as 6-8 for a large one, last years green house pulled 4lbs of each plant in super soil
