How Did Everyone Take-Up Growing?

I just had an apprentice, and his lack of commitment is the reason he is no longer an apprentice. If you ever decide to go that route, I would recommend a single guy or girl without complications of children.
Sound advice. I don't know about the apprenticeship program though, it breaks the cardinal rule. I can't teach anyone how to grow, that would mean I had done it before ;) I have considered starting a group on here though that is sort of an apprentice program/each one teach one/big brothers big sisters where a qualified newb gets paired with a qualified veteran and they have a teacher/pupil relationship. I think it could have numerous benefits. The first one is that instead of starting ANOTHER thread called "how often do I water?" or "Please HELP! I thinks something's wrong" said newb could just consult their big brother/sister. If the veteran is stumped, then it can be an open thread for the community. Obviously "little brother/sister" gets the benefit of having a teacher, "big brother/sister" has someone to share their knowledge with, and it builds camaraderie. Winning!

i had a good job and could afford all the bud i wanted but dealers are a bunch of idiots. they're sloppy, too expensive, shady, hard to get to, and they never know what they're talking about. meeting in parking lots or apartments with parades of traffic so i could buy their "dro" and then drive around with it got old. getting different grades of shit for the same money got old.

i decided to take all the money i was making and get that shit myself and it turned into an addictive hobby.
And if memory serves me correct, you battled a hurricane or 2 along the way.

On the flipside, my apprentice had a lot more to lose than I...that's why I chose him. Unfortunately his schooling/work/family took up all his time. With respect to this site, simply watching all 3 parts of this would answer almost every newb question:

Jorge is definitely the man. I have a couple of his DVD's and his Marijuana Horticulture book. All important and frequently used pieces in my ganja library (aka the stack of books and shit I keep stowed apart from all the other books)

I got into MMJ about 3 years ago.. but

about 10 years ago a buddy told me his brother used it for a skin condition.. I laughed and thought really what does he rub the weed on his arm.. just an excuse to use MMJ.. (he uses in that way (salve)+ he takes it for nausea from a pill he takes for his skin too)

I was on pills for my pain for 22 years (off that crap now!).. only really came to my senses about 3 years ago.. when I began to do my own research on it and finally talked to the guy and tho I knew he from his brother for a few years we never hung out.. or spoke much and now I make a point to go out and hang with him least 2-3 times a mo.. he was the one who basically mentored me in all things MMJ related inc growing

I told him about my original thoughts on MMJ and him and we lol about it.. best news was last year when he was impressed with my plants and harvest + smoke.. I make it a point to always save some of the top colla's for the guy.

+ folks here have been helpful too

There was never any good smoke around here and everything that was halfway decent was way over priced. So at 16 a buddy and I planted a bunch of seeds in the woods. Ended up with a whole bunch of pretty good smoke and the best part.....it was free. I vowed to never buy weed again.

I grew up on a farm so I had general knowledge of growing things, but pretty much any job I ever had has been destroying shit(logging, butchering, demo, mining) so 1 day I decided to have a garden, put lots of stuff in it and it grew well, very rewarding to cultivate and not destroy. 1 day a buddy comes over and asks me to go on a pick up with him. So we meet this ex peace of shit rip off artist who sells my friend a bag of wet mids, we leave and go back to my place then fire up a bowl on my porch and are looking at my garden and he says "you could do this better" I thought he meant the garden and I said "wtf man I like my garden" he says "no man you could grow so much better weed". I'm no guru but it sure as hell was better and its rewarding and growing mj keeps me balanced like any other plant. Yes I am a little crazy lol.

My bud and I started back in 87 or 88.
Weed was getting hard to find and people were getting busted.
High Times was publishing articles on how to grow and we decided to give it a try.
Bought a 400 watt HPS and MH and built two small rooms for growing and flowering.

Long story short: The grow was cooked to death by the lights and summer heat, I had a few hundred dollars run up on my credit card.
Reagan pushed the war on drugs with FLIR
and obtained lists of people who bought lights and growing apparatus
from the vendors in High Times and such and were busting people all over the place.

Pretty much ended growing... until now.:bigjoint:

I inherited some plants back in '11 from my daughter's boyfriend when they moved since they couldn't take them where they were going. There were three of them. That is when I joined RIU and was doing great until some damn kids stole the tops off of them. Pissed me off so bad. Then last year I started from seed, the first time ever for me. Only one made it to harvest, the other three died on me. It was some damn good bud though, I am still smoking it :) This time around I started 6. All but 1 of them survived. I just recently started some Sour Diesel to go outside since I heard it was some pretty smelly stuff. Hell, the girls in here now are smelling so heavenly I hate to move them but I'm going to have to.

I wanted to see if I could do it. My mom gave me a medicine containers worth of bag seeds and I found RIU, I read about the process and became really curious. I had two successful grows and the seed was planted.

genetics, my great-grandfather was a moonshiner who shot a man while delivering product on horse back to backwoods taverns in the foothills. and i got tired of crap weed. mrs sunny is an accountant so all i had to do was put the numbers out there. she saw the savings and the rest is history. too bad the rest of american doesn't think like she does :eyesmoke:

I received some seeds from a breeder friend of mine. After that I found RIU. The rest all fell in place. The initial reason I started was because I just simply got tired of paying for pot lol.

I just started now because prices are too damn high.. Dealers suck.. the weed sucks.. And it just looked really fun to grow. I can see it becoming a life long hobby.. Probably not a career, but for sure a loved hobby.

Oh and next season will be even better since I plan on growing strains that will help with my anxiety issues. If I can grow a good strain for my anxiety, growing weed will be even more than a hobby.

Dated a gentleman years ago and he had an out building dedicated to his grow. I spent time helping him and never forgot the lessons learned. Then MI went MMJ and the rest is history. He still grows better weed then I but then he always did.

Man my comma button won't work now. Shite.

For me it was a natural progression. I wanted weed and was a cheap bastard so I started trying to grow it fortunatley I had 2 friends that were always worried about getting busted so you add one cheap bastard and two paranoid bastards and that equals somebody wanting to grow weed. I can still remember our first female sativa the smell it had the buzz it produced we were hooked and 36 yrs later we are still at it......wouldnt trade it for anything....

Ah, the late 80's...when Ronald and Nancy Reagan effectively shut down foreign imports and dried up the market for damn near a year. Then the domestic market took off by the time King George the 1st took office.
