they tear shit up though. If you have a nice flower bed or something...they'll destroy it.

they're always scratching and digging for bugs.

breed dependent. most of the better breeds (imo) lay 4-6 eggs a week.

barred rocks, white rocks, black stars. are all very hardy breeds and good for meat or eggs. They are considered dual purpose breeds.

something like a leghorn may lay an egg every day but won't take as well to heat or cold and are skinny little bastards.

They are horrible here... I live in WV. I've tried sevin dust and it does the trick but that stuff is nasty. I'd hate to see what it would do to a human. As for the soapy water trick, it traps a few but not many at all. They really tore up my garden last year.. as I mentioned my Brussels sprouts and broccoli. I had 48 tomato plants which I thought the the horn worms got in to but it also could've been the stink bug. When fall hit these past few summers, the north side of my house was completely cover with them. It was like something out of a horror movie. I hate them with a passion.
Thanks for all the new ideas guys, I'll definitely check them out. I've googled them, usually getting them same old answers. As for the chickens, I might have to try them out. I've noticed that a lot of people in my neck of the woods have been getting chickens.. even the winery down the street.. I just assumed it was part of the "prepper" fad. We were actually just talking about getting some chickens for the kids a few days back.

Oh, it seems as if the cayenne pepper or hot pepper sprays don't affect much out here.. doesn't even deter the rabbits or deer. To keep the rabbits out of my garden I found that planting onion bulb in a patch about 6" wide around the perimeter keeps the rabbits out. They say that marigolds keep deer away from your garden but the deer out here will eat the marigolds. Had that happen about 3 summers ago.

I've tried the human hair out.. and it seems as if the deer and rabbits get used to the scent. My ex was a hairdresser and would bring me hair to use every week. I'm going to try the coyote urine out and see if it'll keep the bastards away. I've also heard that coffee grounds will keep them away; I'm willing to try just about anything these days.
As far as the stink bugs, we had a warm day today and I ended up catching 11 of those SOB's in my house.

guineas can be a bit of a pain to keep i'm told. any chicken does a fantastic job of killing bugs around the yard...I've seen them kill mice even.
I've seen the chickens here running around with field mice and shrews in their mouth and they will eat a wide variety of bugs plus you're always guaranteed your breakfast
