How do I increase resin?

Hiya,

Just finished my first real grow following recommendations learned in this forum. I was very pleased with the final product. (See picture).

I'm starting a new batch and want to know how to increase the thc production. As you can see from the picture, the buds in the first batch were well developed. However they didn't seem to have that much resin. They produce a very nice high, but it doesn't last all that long.

In my mind I keep hearing David Allen Coe doing The Devil Went Down to Jamaica, "green as a bullfrog, sticky as glue". hahaha! I am not sure what I need to do to duplicate that "stickiness".

I am assuming that the more resin (thc, stickiness, whatever you want call it) improves the potency and the duration of the high. Is that correct?

This batch was grown in a Phototron (housing limitations prevent a "grow room"). They are being given constant water and nutes through a feed-a-tron.

Is the THC production a product of the amount of light, the amount of water, or a combination of both? I used to think it was both, but if so why is stuff grown hydroponically so good? That leads me to believe it is the amount of light.

Another possibility is how long the flowered. The batch in the picture flowered for 47 days (not quite 7 weeks). Would they have been more potent if I had let them go longer? I harvested because the hairs were mostly brown and I had read you should harvest when they were 50-60% brown.

I'd appreciate opinions on how to make the next batch something David Allen Coe would sing about! :-)

Thanks!

well what kind of nutrients do you use? get a good nutrient line like a grow/bloom nutrient system from foxfarm or something else someone uses that you read about... How powerful are the lights you have?

Yes light will play a factor in Tricome production as will genetics if you have the money my suggestion would be to get a high presser sodium lamp for your phototron hang in in the center and get a small pc type fan to exhaust the heat. Or make some kinda cool tube for it. Good luck!

get your humidity down to 35% or less if you can... mines at about 25% right now and things are starting to frost up considerably as the plant produces more resin to "seal" itself from the heat - good luck.

Colors, and the amount of "hairs" has zero to do with potency. It's all about the trichomes and maturity of the plant. A plant flowered for a mere seven weeks will be like smoking it during veg state. I know I know, the seedbank or whoever said 8 week flower time, but you have to understand that is under optimum, super-controlled conditions and environment, which none of us can really duplicate. Next grow, let them flower for a while longer and you will notice a marked improvement in the taste, quality, and most likely even quantity of your harvest. Seven weeks is like nothing, I'm amazed you got any type of buzz at all after such a short flower period.

Ditto on the should have flowered longer, I just started my 10th week, gonna harvest this weekend, test smoke high was incredible!

But what I want to share with you is the way your plant looks in the pic, is that it has N toxicity this is evident from the deep dark green and curling leaves, the eagle claw leaves are bad and indicate that it was not watered properly besides having to much N.

Now I am a keep em green grower and do add N during flowering but there a such thing as too much and it will hinder flower production.

It was said earlier that we need to create perfect eviroments for great plant growth, getting your grow area dialed in better will increase your resin production

Thanks to all for the feedback. In answer to a couple questions, I used Foxfarm nutes. I will cut down amount this next batch. The lights are 6 55 watt 4800K bulbs. As far as genetics, I don't actually know what strain this is. I do know that the seeds came from some of the most potent stuff I have ever smoked. It was so good it inspired me to try this. And my new batch comes from the same mother plant. Also, even though they only flowered 47 days, they still give a great buzz - just doesn't last that long.

So next time, fewer nutes, and longer flowering. I also like the idea of the sodium lamp with an exhaust fan and am going to work on that.

Thanks to all for the feedback! It's greatly appreciated!

So how long do your plants normally flower? I know that each strain is different so there are no hard and fast rules, but what is a ballpark estimate? 8-10 weeks? 10-12? Longer? And how do you tell they are ready to harvest? By looking at the trichomes? Can that be done with the naked eye or do you need a jeweler's loop or magnifying glass of some kind?

Thanks again for the feedback. I'm learning! And looking forward to the next batch! :-)
