Yeah, but it DOES matter when you're in there twittling with it. Put your finger in the wrong spot and BLAMMO. If you mess with it while it's off, the worst that happens is you blow a fuse when you kick it back on. If you do it hot, the worst that can happen is . . . we'll never find out how this story ends.
Yayah of course will never fuck about with putting the live wires in and out of the terminals whilsts plugged in

it doesn't make a difference which terminal you connect which wire to, as long as you connect both terminals and both wires it will work. (and if it doesnt you can switch them)

Then how did you get shocked? LOL
Dude i got shocked, because i touched the metal plate it was earthed too, i think.... These lights ive heard doing some research dont usually have an earth ( which isint neccasary ) Because i was wiring it up to a pre-existing plug that was used to power an amplifier, it was earthed however, and my skin touched it when and i fucked myself over big time and im not gonna lie im an idiot and a little bit traumatized...lool shit happens, but theres 3 fuses in the line, so i doubt i could have died...Theres the fuse from the first plug, the extension cables fuse, and the houses main fuse...So yeah just gotta be careful FUCKING HURTS THO UGH will trry again tommorow or im jut gonna be very lazy and buy these

...... basically im using a plug from an amp and its got the yellow ( the ground one ) attached to metal, its fine to leave this yes???
..... It hurt like a bitch!!! Haha
you dont NEED the ground to work but it is there to prevent you from getting Zapped so leave it attached & yeah it hurts but think of it as building character ;)

..... they dont seem to go in any specific direction and are not marked positive or negative...Nutting...What should i do?? does it matter which was its wired :( im so scared
the light will work if wired backwards but you can get a shock if it is.
look carefully at the terminals,-1 will go to the center post & the other will go to the base that the light screws into. the center post should be the hot(brown).
work carefully and be careful when you power it up.to prevent getting zapped, after it works, take another piece of wire, ground 1 end and touch it to anything you could come in contact with,if it sparks, you have the hot & neutral (brown & blue) backwards.
if not comfortable, why not ask around to see if anyone you know can do it for you. find an excuse for why you need the lights that fits your lifestyle, portible light for working on cars, painting, ect

220, while it hurts twice as much to get shocked with. It is a better voltage, especially for grow room. To figure out the max wattage you can run without blowing a circiut you use ohms formula. (Amps x volts = watts) and westinghouses 80% rule. So in the us we run 120 volts.
Say you have a 20 amp breaker and 120 volt power. 20 x 120 = 2400
80% of 2400 is 1920. So with 20 amps and 120 volts you shoulnd run more than 1920 watts through that circuit. But what if we had 220 voltage and the same amount of amps. 20 x 220= 4400. 80% is 3520. So you could pull 3520 watts through the same curciut. Thats why in the us dryers and high wattage equptment is hooked up to 220 and the rest of the house is 120
I understand but in the UK, breakers are 5 or 13 amps so you are not getting that much extra power out of a standard socket. as I said earlier, on a 110 circiut, I will work live but 220 is a little to hairy so I try not to. the UK can keep thier 220 outlets, I prefer the US way w/ 110 for low current draw & 220 for the big stuff which is actually 2 110 circiuts anyway. the closest we have here is a 208 leg found in some commercial apps.

mrmadcow, most uk houses use 32a ring mains for the power sockets.

Growww, electrocuting yourself isn`t a good idea. My guess is you may have tucked the earth wire (with the soldered terminal attached) into the top of bayonet light socket and shorted it to the live or neutral pins.

You don`t need the earth wire in the bayonet fitting, only the blue and brown. You have a few options,
A) cut the green/yellow wire back so its out of the way and wire the brown to one pin in the light fitting and the blue to the other pin
B) drop into wilko/B&Q and buy a length of 2-core cable (3amp) it`ll only have the brown and blue wires.

C) Buy the homebase light fitting.. which sounds like the safest bet to be honest ;)
I see its an edison screw (ES) lamp fitting but the light fitting that zapped you is bayonet cap (BC22). Best check your cfl has the same kind of base or it won`t fit.
