The problem with DIY CO2 experiments is that generally they make one large burst of CO2 and then your fans will pull it right out of your grow room. To make something that your plants will thank you for every day you need to implement some kind of wick system. The best way (IMO) to do this is to take two plastic cups, one bigger than the other. Make a little hole in the smaller one and push some twine through it. Pour a little vinegar into the bigger cup, some baking soda into the smaller one and put them together so the twine will slowly pull the vinegar into the baking soda. This will slowly release CO2 into your grow room for a couple of days. Voila.

I brew a 5 gallon batch of ale every 7-10 days and keep in in the closet below my grow closet. that produces lots of co2 and it keeps going until it's time to bottle and then I start the next brew. it's a win win because I've always got a lot of good quality inexpensive drink and my plants get all the co2 they could possibly want. you can get a really cheap kit to start you out here: www.art-of-brewing.co.uk

Since there is a 99.9% chance you don't need it, it will have zero impact so it doesn't matter what you use. There is plenty of co2 in any normal residence.

yes there is plenty of co2 in a normal house but elevated levels of co2 will increase growth, i just dont think you will get levels enough to make a difference out of a DIY, but its just for experiment, you can also try dry ice.
