well there are guidelines to follow but i personally only go by what i can see/feel.
I keep my lights as close as possible without burning the tops. if thats 12inches then fine...if its 24 inches ok...if its 8inches ok.
if you have a fan blowing on your light then you can get it much closer than without a fan blowing on it. you dont need an air cooled reflector for this (it helps) you can simply just put a fan on a small stand close to the light and have it blowing directly on it or in between the light and the plants (so heat doesnt build up on the tops).
good way to judge is hold you hand directly over the canopy. does you have get warm/hot after 1 min or so? if so then its too close. keep adjusting until you find the right spot.
thats the best advice. don't follow a chart that says keep it 18" away or whatever. go by how close you can get it without it being too close.
Put your hand just over the top of your tallest plant, keep moving the light closer to your plant(s) until the heat feels uncomfortable on your hand - Always works for me.
