How far away ?

Once seed is germinated and put in soil how far should a 100w normal lightbulb be away from the soil, working on getting a 250 maybe smaller HPS but havent got the time the quicker the replies the better!

(more info) the seed has been in the soil for about 24 hours and i can see it pushing up through the surface, i dont want to stretch it so knowing on how far away my light source should be is key for me right now!

no need for the hps yet use a couple cfls then you can veg with a hps but mh would do much better

how far away should a 100w bulb be from the soil though? do you know, the seedling is just barley at the top of the soil. dont want it to stretch

can someone let me know how far away it should be, lowered the light to about 12" away from the top of the soil, the is a small amount of heat still coming from the bulb this far away. someone can simply just let me know if this is far even away or not.

What kind of bulb is it? Heat at 12"? Is it just an old incandescent light/household light? Most cfls can get about 4-6 inches from the plant. If it is warm at 12", i would not go any closer. It is alright for the new seedling to stretch right now if you can't help it. If it wants to lean over some, prop it up with a paper clip or something. Make sure you have an oscillating fan giving it a slight breeze to help strengthen it also. Once it starts growing sets of leaves, transplant it into your veg pot and bury it up to 1/2" below your first set of leaves. Gives you more root output and slightly shorter plant. Good luck.

man if you cant even be patient waitin for replies how can you expect to wait 8 weeks for some weed

good to know mps, sounds like a good idea just let it grow as much as it wants then went transplanting top up to about an inch from first leaves.

You can plant it deeper than 1 inch below if you like. I usually bury it to within a half inch of the cotyledons. Good luck. Sometimes the seedling stage can be a pain.

ah, skunk the seedlings are killing me here.. very new to growing and and picking up some great information on this site, and people like you but theres just so much to learn.

General rule of thumb is if you can put your hand between the light and plant and hold it there comfortably, you shouldn't burn the plant.
However, that does seem like more than enough light for a sprout.
