how far should lights be from seedlings

lets say you have a couple tomato seedling goin and then one of them burns to a crisp overnight when it is left like an inch away from the light

how far should they be

CFL.. fairly close, doesn't matter much at first.

MH or HPS, atleast a couple feet. They don't need much light at first.

If you have CFLs I keep mine about 2-3 inches at all times. seems to keep them growing at a good steady pace without stretching. I have never used MH or HPS so i cant help you there. good luck with you grow!!!
