when you trim, trim the roots equally much as you trim the top.
you can cut a big tree, down to a tiny stub, so long as it got some green and if you trimmed the roots to match whats above ground in size
(slightly in favor of the rootmass to allow for the soil.5-10%)
which takes space considerations entirely out the window.
(though you might not want to be as drastic as cutting down to a stub if you really like the mother and want to keep it, slightly increased chance of killing the plant if you get the rootmass wrong, best to do a 25% trimming more regularily, do the 50-75+% (have done 95% with success)

although ive heard of quite many people just cloning a clone after a clone. never really keeping a mother. even for 10 years or more.
