how long do you keep your plant at 12/12?

I have been doing 12/12 for about two weeks now, how much longer do I do this, it looks like its flowering with white hairs growing up and down the stems. Just wanted to know how much longer do I do this. Or should I put it in darkness longer? Any help would be deeply appreciated.

Finish times are pretty much strain specific. Indicas finish around the 60 to 65 day mark, while a Sativa can take up to 120 days plus to finish. (But MAN they're worth the wait!!)

At the risk of stating the obvious, you do have them in COMPLETE darkness, right? And you know not to EVER interrupt that dark period, right? Even dim light as small as red power indicator on a radio or an LED clock can stress the girls and make them throw nanners.

There are lots of ways people trust to tell when the buds have peaked at ripeness.
The best, MOST RELIABLE method is to go by the color of the trichomes. When the plant starts producing "crystals" (trichomes) the peak of ripeness can be seen in the trichomes. The trichs start out clear, and throughout the flowering, they will turn milky, then they will turn amber.
There is a window of opportunity where you can pick, and decide on the kind of high you prefer. When the Trichs are mostly clear/milky, you'll get a nice, active, lets go do something kinda high, whereas whe they are milky/amber, you'll get more of the couch-lock devastating kind of high. The more the amber, the more couch glue. Most folks like a 50/50 milky/amber.
People will tell you to wait until the last possible second to chop, but thats an individual preference.

Hope this helps.

The plant measures the darkness and produces the flowering hormone - people go on and on about light leaks - the truth is it DOESNT make a differnce, it's just not something you keep doing. Moonlight... thats one reason it makes no differnce. Just dont keep turning it all on and off. And plants can take anywhere for 6 weeks to 14 weeks to flower depending on the plant. Also, harvest on colour of trichomes as thats the only way to guage maturity of the trichomes.

I doubt you'd want to try on your grow, nor would I. I beg to differ, but it DOES matter.
A brief, flash in the pan type of interruption most likely won't make a diff. I forgot my cigs in the room one evening, and used my phone as a light to get 'em. I doubt the plants even saw that light.
BUT....a constantly on dim red power light (just like the ones on my timers) WILL affect them. I know from first hand experience that you can read a newspaper by moonlight in nature. (and in a lot of more rural areas), and lightning strikes can be blinding, both of which occur in nature, but I am here to tell you that the constantly on little lights you wouldn't even think about can cause you problems. Bright as hell instant (or mostly so) flashes won't hurt, but do that enough and it will. Most newbies (myself especially) have a need to see & check up on the plants that borders on mania. Your wife (or girlfriend, husband, I don't care) brings home a fern, and it's no big deal. Introduce a pot plant to that equation.

Best thing is to reinforce the unholy horrors that will happen should they violate the sanctity of the dark.
They'll figure it out eventually, but by then they'll most likely be over the "newbie" syndrome, and won't be forced to look in on them every 10 min.
Go telling them that it's OK within reason, and they're screwed. "within reason" to you and I is most probably alot less than it would be to a newbie. "Lets take just one more look, what can it hurt?"
