take a trip to another med firendly state, a friendlier one (cali or colo) what you have should be covered, maine is fucked up... go to that state get a doc script, (cost is pricey, especially since you'll have to do it every year /but those things are recipcle, meaning every state excepts the others even though they have different policies. tell the doc your on a work trip not vacay, tell him your problems, be honest. in a state where they arent threatened to lose there licence they'll understand. all doctors want to help but some have their hands tied, not their fault. :(

good luck brother.

I'm in Maine and a disabled veteran so my only medical insurance is through the VA up in Togus. I'm an amputee and have rods in my back. I live in chronic, debilitating pain, and was on Oxycontin and Methadone (several grams of each a month, yes grams not milligrams) for a while. Though it helped a little I had a constant dread of every movement I had to make. Eventually a family member brought me over some pot (they had heard that it can help with back pain). It was at least as affective as the narcotics in regards to pain control but most importantly it alleviated the dread of moving.. I didnt hesitate to move, though when I did, I still felt pain its significance was diminished in my overall well being because it/or the threat of it nolonger loomed over all my decision making and actions. (I was actually free and uninhibited to move, well at-least until after the fact)

Such a miracle I reported it to my doctor.... Whom abruptly cut me off of all painkillers as I was now a "street drug abuser" in his words and "supplying narcotics to a recreational drug addict would cost him his license to prescribe medication".. Now I can no longer get any pain meds through the VA, (as I am a drug seeker for having suggested medical marijuana) they don't prescribe Marijuana because they are a federal government agency and Pot is still against federal law, and I cant get a civilian doctor because my medical insurance wont cover it.

Additional I have heard that most pot friendly doctors only prescribe for cancer AIDS or glaucoma, so with my meager fixed income I cant afford to establish a relationship with a doctor using cash to pay for several appointments only to find out that they are reluctant to prescribe for pain as apposed to disease and forced to start over with yet another doctor..

Anyone have any suggestions as I hate to break the law just to obtain my much needed (more than ever being without any pain meds at all now) medication?
I'm in Maine too, you sound to have "chronic pain".....that is covered under the law.
I got a doctor referral from here: http://mainemedmarijuana.com/ They can help you out, I dont want to post the doctors info here or anywhere else on the web. Finding a doctor that will even consider MMJ is hard enough due to the expanded law being so new. I know man, my PCP and my neurologist both know i use MMJ, but cant sign off due to their doctors groups rules. You need an independent doctor, that link can help you.

I called the doctor and set up an appointment, my appointment is next week, I'll let you know how it goes. I did tell the doctor I have chronic Migraines from a brain cyst and degenerative arthritis in my knees. Also told the doctor the reason I was calling and that I wanted pain relief without having to depend on Opiates. Didnt seem to be a problem with the doctor at all, just have to show up with documentation.(X Rays, MRI's, med. history etc.)

Maine does not reciprocate mm recommendations........you cannot legally access mm in maine with a recommendation from another state....

I don't fault doctors for the positions they are placed in (that would be like shooting the messenger).
The problem is that when you tell most doctors "I'm in pain" they seem to only hear "I want drugs" and make a snap decision that you are either an addict or looking to sell drugs to others that are.. If you have the audacity to suggest something you have found affective in treatment it will only further reinforce their suspicion of your addiction or intent to distribute..

Guile, there is that problem which you describe with people going to them seeking certs, and it can be very subjective. However, there are other problems with it as well. Take my primary doc for example. He supports my use of mmj. He would have certified me in a second if he were allowed to. He is in a large association of doctors and his bosses won't allow their docs to do it.
I did get mine from another doctor but there are lots of docs who support it but don't certify out of fear for the feds or whatever. It is all pretty new though, hopefully by the time I have to renew it will be a little easier.

not true. maine does except state offical cards. and in states like cali and coli the card is administard on site. you go home with it.. check the laws man, ALL states allow mm users to be mm users in their mm friendly state.. If your a sick patient in cali, with a card maine says your legal to still recieve services for your illness.. read the law.

p.s. if you want to argue the legality of it, its the dual sate status that comes up.. but thats just paperwork..

I sent in the patient request form at the address you had listed, the response I received follows:

Good Morning XXX (guile)

Unfortunately, the State of Maine Medical Marijuana (MM) program is not recognized by the federal program and if you were to be found out through the VA you run the risk of losing all your benefits. Hence the reason your physician through the VA reacted the way they did.

We've been approached by several Veterans and the standard response to all is that we are not comfortable helping with the process at this time. We hope that someday the federal government will catch up with states and recognize MM for what it is. A fabulous alternative to all the narcotics out there.

I apologize for having to say no, but we're unable to help you at this time. If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to email me or call our toll free number (1-866-327-4559). I answer that phone as well!

Sincerely,

YYY (friendly helpful person)

not to be an ass but there are very few people that know more about Maine's mm law than I do....

2.1.3 Authorized conduct by a visiting qualifying patient. A visiting qualifying patient from another jurisdiction who possesses a valid registry identification card or its equivalent from that jurisdiction may for 30 calendar days after entering the State engage in conduct authorized for a registered patient without having to obtain a registry identification card issued by the department except that the visiting qualifying patient may not obtain in Maine marijuana for medical use based on a registry identification card from another jurisdiction.

1.25 Patient. For the purposes of these rules, patient means a person whose physician has provided a written certification to the department for the patient’s medical use of marijuana.
1.26 Physician. Physician means a person licensed as an osteopathic physician by the Board of Osteopathic Licensure pursuant to 32 M.R.S.A. Chapter 36 or a person licensed as a physician or surgeon by the Board of Licensure in Medicine pursuant 32 M.R.S.A. Chapter 48 who is in good standing and who holds a valid federal Drug Enforcement Administration license to prescribe drugs.

Well I finally got my cert, and met a pretty cool caregiver.. I think by next year I'm going to try and file as a caregiver myself (seems like there would be alot of advantages to joining the local co-op, like gifting to each other instead of destroying overages, and trading/sharing genetics).

Hello from Central Maine ... I have been a cardholder since February 2011 and have a very wonderful and compassionate caregiver in the Portland area ... I am in the process right now of designing and building a seperate Veg Station as well as a Flowering Station in a spare room that we received since my daughter moved out of the nest. Looking soon to be planting my first baby in late October / Early November if finances come in. Once that happens and we start generating some great weed, I will be looking for a few patients to "Pay It Forward" ... Also, when things get up and running, I would love to share some mothers or clones from my garden of love ...

Looking forward to some great post on here from my Brothers and Sisters who reside in Maine ~ The Frozen Tundra of Planet Earth ~

Peace and Love

Hey there fellow Central Mainer, and welcome to one of the best sites of it's kind on the net by far .... Especially the Sub-Forum for MMJ - Maine Patients. I can recommend that you will get plenty of help on here from both Mainers as well as the General Public out there in the RIU Main Section.

Looking very forward to seeing some great posts and pics in whatever endeavor you choose. Even perhaps, if you are willing since we are both from the same area, I would even be willing to meet ya over a cup of Joe.

Hope things go well for ya, and again, Welcome :-)

Welcome SickOfPain :-) I am also glad to see another member of here from sunny Central Maine :-) Congrats on becoming a new member of Maine's Medical Program. I too can kill cat grass with no problem, and found out that I too can grow my medicine. This was obtained with some basic knowledge that I had researched prior to my grow, and than was enhanced with all of my friends help here, especially in the Maine Patients sub-forum. Glad that everything is going well with your grow(s), and I am looking very forward to some great posts and pics(if possible) from you in the future.

Merry Christmas and All The Very Best in 2012
Happy Holiday Trails !!
