how many cfl watts will a fan cool? assuming its pulling through a zen micro style carbon filter?

I am shooting for 120-160 watts is one fan enough?

few other questions:

How many watts can you pull from one outlet? one receptacle within that outlet?

how far does a 40w cfl need to be away from wood to be sure no fires will occur?

not sure about the fan but the 40 watt cfl could be just about touching the wood and it wouldnt start a fire. ive got my 125 true watt cfl 5cm above my plant and it doesnt even brake a sweat so theres no chance it would cause wood to light.i also think you will be pushing it for 1 pc fan to cool them lights, 2 would be better.

I have 2, but that would mean to carbon filters... basically its a 80 mm pc fan... I guess it will be one of those install it and see kinda deals...

im pretty sure how watts dont have anything todo with the amount a fan will cool, the "cfm" you mentioned is cubic feet per meter. fans cfm's are measures in how much air it will move. not sure about the other question. as far as how far, cfls burn really cool. unless your being very careless you wont start a fire with them being too close to a hood. you can literally put them 1-2 inches from the top of plants with a fan and not burn them. hope this helps a bit. goodluck

not really... I am thinking of running 3-4 40 watt cfls.. I have one 80mm pc fan which will be on the outside of the case pulling through a zen style carbon filter ..i am wondering just how well that one fan will cool ... i could always get a heat shield glass...

Check out this sketchup..

that is the idea with the glass separater.. it would be nice and less $$ to say screw that... but i can only do that if one pc fan pulling through carbon will cool my rig... looking for someone with a similar design.. especially pc growers?

any body know of any great pc grow links concerning ventilation?

It's cubic feet per minute. Not meter.

To answer the original question. If you are using a bought carbon filter, no pc fan will work with it. If you are using a carbon filter you made, next to no pc fan will push air through it. The rated cfm and the actual cfm are completely different ball games once you throw on some resistance, meaning you put a filter infront of it. cfm is dramatically reduced. With PC fans, often it's 0 or close to it. I bought 2 tornado pc fans rated at something like 150cfm once I put a carbon filter pad on them, hardly an air came through. They just don't have the torque required to continually push the air through them. cfm is rated with 0 resistance.

On my first grow, I built a grow box out of particle board and had cfls basically touching the board all day long. Never had a fire. I even painted the wood white.

mr2shim answered your fan questions so I will answer this one if you are in N America. most outlets are rated for 15 amps so multiply amps times volts =1800 watts. now you should only use 80% so keep it under 1500 watts. also be aware that the outlet is probably on a circiut w/ several other outlets & they are controlled by circuit breaker, usually a 15 or 20 amp breaker so the combined load on all the outlets on the circuit will be 1800 watts or 2400 watts.
the rest of the world doesn't use 120 volts so if you are on the other side of the big pond, you will need to do the math yourself.
amps x volt= watts
watts devided by volts = amps

Okay gotcha... so that would be alot as far as electricity goes... no way to even get close to that with a micro grow...

I am planning on using a Zen style filter or Sugarbear style... whatever... basically two ;pencil cup deal... I would like to think that one fan would work but its not looking good.. how could I cool it?? go with the glass idea?? seems like alot of hassle. I am looking at running like 100-150 watts. just trying to supply my own lungs.

and MR2shim.... you say push air through the fans.. shouldnt it be pull???

ohhh where can you get ONA blocks? does local hardware stores carry anything similar (lowes, HD)"?
