how many plants would I be able to place in a airing cupboard with dimensions, 3ftw 2.5ftd 8fth. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

5-7 gallon pot will work just fine.

If you can keep it cool, a 400 watt hps would rock that space with 53 watts per square foot.
