I’m a straight up noob but I wanted to share what I’ve learned thus far. After becoming legal in Michigan I wanted to figure out how much it would cost for a decent set up. The problem is I really didn’t have anyone to teach me so I hit the internet to find the best deals and answers. After everything I’ve learned here I thought it was my duty to give back to the community that has given so much information to me.

I know there are many options on how you set up your grow but this is what’s worked for me. You can sub many of these things for DIY applications but to be honest I found decent quality products for great prices and when you factor the headaches and time it just made sense to purchase most things (for me anyway).

$208
First thing I bought was a 600 watt grow light that came with an air cooled reflective lid, glass cover and a MH and HPS bulb I found it for $208, came with a dime-able ballast, hanging supplies, automatic timer and free shipping (3-5 business days)

$114
Next was the grow tent, I found this little gem on EBAY sold by a reputable company HTG Supply, 4x4x6. Has a ton of ports, windows and was only $114 w/ free shipping. Yeah, you can buy Panda plastic and build your own but for $114 and I don’t have to fuck with a bunch of stuff, it was well worth it to me. Not to mention it’s a great size for my 600 watt light and If I’m not happy with it I can return it to HTG. Oh yeah, and free shipping

$125
Now I had to take care of my wife’s biggest concern odor control. This thing arrived today and it’s frickin huge! A 6” 440CFM fan and a big ass air scrubber (thing is seriously huge). Also free shipping

Also some misc items total $76
A variable speed controller for the fan $19.00

PH tester $5.95

6” flex duct 25 foot to hook up fan and scrubber $19

Coco Tek grow medium $11
Picked that up from my local grow shop

$80 in Nutes
Everyone has their own thoughts on Nutes but below is what I went with. I purchased all of my Nutes from a local hydro store. It was about $80 for all.

$20 Misc pots and tray
$20 for oscillating fan
$20 PPM meter

Total $663
So there ya go, that’s my very basic but decent first grow set up. Obviously some of these products are not top of the line, but for a beginner everything should be great until I figure out where I want to invest my money. You’ll notice I did not include a cloner. Many people sell clones in my area for $10 a pop with a huge selection. Still waiting for my tent to arrive, once it gets here I will do my 1st grow journal. Right now I have 2- Strawberry Coughs and 4 Sour Diesel veggin.

Good luck and Have fun with it!!!

thats a nice little set up for a first grow. you actually bought all the things you need. alot of people will try to making do with not have one or more things and it affects their grows but you got most of it covered.

my grow closet isnt finished and im already at close to 1000$ invested lol, most of that cost is my lights though. i cant use hps or mh lights in the space i have without a/c so i went with leds. i wish i lived in a colder area it would make things alot easier.

i have the exact same ph tester. its ok for the money, make sure you get the one that comes with the calibration powder, itll make your life easier down the road.

for vent ducting you can get it for 7 bucks at big-lots. pretty much the cheapest ive seen it anywhere.

btw how loud is that inline fan? i need to pick one up and am looking for a quiet one that isnt crazy expensive.

yup its amazing how fast things add up lol i started with a budget off about 500$ and somehow im into my setup for nearly a grand. I did end up going with LED lights after much deliberation so that added to my startup cost a fair bit.
It helped to spread purchases over a few months.

The problem with this Hobby, that I'm learning very fast is that you always want something bigger better and more expensive.... :P
I would like to buy LEDS for Veg. Are you using them for flowering, veggin or both?

Thanks for the info on the tester. I will definitely be getting some calibration powder (never heard of that before).

As for the fan, I ran it when I opened the box and it's really moving all of the 440cfm. The fan comes with a fake leather cover which helps with the noise. It was quieter than I expected but you would probably hear it through a standard wall into the next room, but it doesn't sound like a hurricane (hope that description helps??). That's why I bought the $20 speed controller, I probably don't need all 440cfm but it's there if I do.
The air scrubber is frickin huge, probably 25" long if not more an at least 8-9" in circumference. Scrubber also comes with the pre filter cover. I didn't see any easy access to change the carbon but if you just pop a couple of the rivets you's have fairly easy access.

Best of luck!!

After reading your post I feel good about what I paid for mine. I got a 400w with a smaller tent, etc and I have paid just below you. Kinda wish I found your tent when I was looking. Good luck!!

aight... i'm kind of a tech dork so I had to buy one and experiment. Before I drop some serious coin on an High Dollar LED I thought I might try this one, should have it in a week or so.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2013-New-300W-LED-Grow-Light-9Band-IR-Flowering-Hydroponic-LED-Grow-Lamp-Panel-/390567591853?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5aefa47fad
This should do for veggin and experimenting. The wave lengths look good (spent and hour learning about wavelengths today) and its about 182 watts (actual wattage), 300 watts listed (100 Leds x 3 watts per).
In a perfect world I would run all LEDS veg to flower and have a sealed room with a water cooled Co2 generator.
But the reality is my experience is damn near zero and my wallet is saying "What the fuck Bro!!!?

looks like a good unit to me, i got my LEDs off ebay from a different seller. That light should work fine for veg and flower, id say 3 or 4 plants max under that one.
Might want to try some sidelighting if you got the room and budget for it, t5 ho's are relativly cheap and work great for me
