how much does size of pot matter???

hello fellows,

i started with 5 lowryder #1 seeds. 2 germ'd in paper towels on top of my digital converter box and put into 2.5gal pots. 3 put directly into FFOS in 1gal pots.
of the two germ'd in paper towels : one died after sprouting...very light green almost yellow, the other is the monster of the group...two top colas (sorry i don't know right terms) and lots of growth underneath and a nice thick stem. the others planded directly into soil(1" deep , sprinkled soil over the seeds very lightly) are much smaller with one cola(flower) than the one in a 2.5gal pot that was germ'd in a paper-towel.

Q: how much does size of pot matter??? all the plants are still quite small even the biggest of the bunch. i can't imagine a 3" plant 'using up' a 1 gal' pot already?!?!?! the monster plant germ'd in paper-towels and in 2.5gal pots has more branches, leaves and is bigger. is that due to pot size???...or the type of germ ????

i hope that made sense...lol

thanks people,
letsdickcheney

If u want bigger, stronger plants, then go with as big container as U can get...Bigger root system means bigger plants, and bigger root system is only possible with bigger containers-logic.....

Happy growing....

not really.. I have seen monster plants grown in tiny pots.. They just need alot more attention.. I think fdd posted some pics of some huge ass outdoor plants in small containers too.

Like said above, large plants drink alot more water. I have some mothers in 5 gallon pots, I only have to water every 2 days.

Lowrider seems to need a deep pot,I have grown several crops and found I get the best results when started in a deep 10+ in pot. it seems they throw a taproot down and based on how deep it goes,it will determine the height of the plant.starting small & repotting didn't help, only when I started in deep pots have I had lowriders(crossed w/ a LRdeisel) grow consistantly above a foot tall.curently using breadbags and from results so far,I will continue. but this is just my opinion.
as for normal plants,I use a large container because it needs less care but have grown over 3 foot plants in 1 gallon containers,as long as they get the water & nutes, they will grow.

i did'nt know about the'tap-root' thing. i was thinking of the root-ball , but it's the longest single-root that determines the size of the plant.

madcow how are you using the bread-bags ?? i do understand that a bread bag stood-up vertically is long deep square tube perfect for planting...but it's obviously too thin to use on its own...right ??? if you fill it with soil does it hold it's shape or are you doing something to it to make it rigid.

thanks

He does very well at that indeed but it does take a bit more on the ball and time than some have to work with and if errors are made they can be made worse because of it but he is living proof it can be done. It just isn’t for everyone.

i've got clones in 1.5 liter pots and some in 1 gallon pots and granted the root mass is bigger in the gallon pot they are still the same size (height and bud) but i'll have to wait to see if one out produces the other
