How much plant per pot?

Hi Everybody,

I am growing outdoors and I have a number of different sized pots to use (2, 4, and 9 gallon). I know the plant will grow as fast as it will grow, but I am curious if anyone has any rule of thumb for how much plant different pot sizes will support well. If I were to estimate the volume of my plant in relation to the pot size X, would I want X amount of plant, or 2X, or...? In short, how do I know the plant is large enough for a given pot to either transplant or flip to flower? Thanks.

EDIT: Some have pointed out that this may seem confusing about me flipping them, since I am growing outdoors. I am in Ecuador, the sun here is 12/12 year around. To stay in veg, I pull the plants indoors at night and give them extra light. When I want to flip them, I just leave them outdoors.

Outdoor pots filled with soil? If so, the bigger the pot the better

If using coco, the pot size is largely uncorrelated with plant size; you can grow trees in a 5 gal bucket provided it gets ample fertigation

Yes, I am growing outdoors in pots. Just standard soil though, I'm in Ecuador and they don't sell any fancy stuff here. If the plant can get arbitrarily large, when do you know you have hit the "diminishing returns" size? I want to get them big obviously, but how big can my plant get before I should just flower it? Thanks.

EDIT: here is my plant now in a 9 gallon pot. It just got transplanted, so is obviously not big enough to flower yet. Should I get it the size of the pot, or twice that, or...?

I use 10 gallon grow bags. Each plant gets to about 6 feet tall after some LST. But I keep it that way on purpose.

Different strains react differently during growth. You won't get a quantifiable answer.

Damn, those are monsters. Yeah, I should have explained that I live in Ecuador, so the sun here is 12/12 year around. I put them inside at night and give them light to keep them in veg. When i want to flower, I just leave them outside. I'll edit my post. Maybe I just need to experiment with my strain then. Thanks.

One thing to consider is the stretch before flower. Many strains will more than double in size in a 2 week period.

You could conceivably start flowering now if you do not want monstrous plants
