How much will 2 plants SMELL?

That's the answer right there. With proper ventilation in your tent, you will be able to control the smell AND the temps.
People just need to pay the cash, our plant is worth 10x the value of silver per ounce but everyone just wants to cheap out on the equipment then wonder why it's not working out properly.

My first few grows were sub-par cos I'd a homemade tent, a bathroom ventilation fan, a bare bulbed 400w HPS and a desktop fan.

I bought two tents, 260cfm extractors, clip-on fans, cooltubes and carbon filters for them and now the only things that can go wrong are actually my fault.

Moral of the story? Spend the cash for the equipment one time and you'll be flying for good or cheap out and end up spending probably twice the money on stupid fixes.

i recently started flowering and my whole room smells dank. it doesnt bother me but sometimes if the apartment maintenance people need to come in to fix something i just turn on that time release air freshener that sprays good smelling odors every 5 minutes or so. then i turn it off when they are gone :D

How would I get rid of the smell if I am leaving my grow tent open due to over heating? I have the tent in a room in my house and the flaps are basically open 100% of the time when the lights are on. Suggestions?
your fucked come flower time...scrubbers are the only thing for tents my man....been growing for a while and I am seriously stressing this fact you better get ahold of you heat problems by forcing air in and out of tent through intake annd exhaust fans. Intake fans run wide open pulling cool air in and your exhaust fan ie carbon filter attached to a high velocity inline fan pulling hot air out of the tent. This is the only way to accomplish everything you need right now along with concealing smell....good luck.... btw here is a look at my setup in my tent.

I use CFLs, so I don't have much of a problem with heat. In fact, for this first grow, I want to avoid using a tent or a cab to avoid heat issues entirely. My plants (seedlings pretty much right now) are just sitting in a bin in the closet, with a clip-on fan for air circulation.

In the thread at https://www.rollitup.org/indoor-growing/273179-cheap-ionizer-carbon-filter-fan.html, the guy says his Holmes air purifier/ionizer with built-in carbon filter "kicks ass". That Holmes product is meant to scrub smaller places than my Delonghi air purifier/ionizer with built-in carbon filter, so I think my DeLonghi will work for my closet. Especially if I use it with odor absorbing gels.

I'll use one DeLonghi in the closet, one outside, plus gels inside and outside. Plus I'll keep the closet door closed for the most part; and keep maintenance people away during flowering (if my babies make it that far).

If I do another grow, I'll do up a tent or a cab and set that in the closet. I'm glad to know about how stanky the plants get though, so I can consider all my options.

I'm being a bit hard-headed about getting a carbon scrubber with an in-line fan because I read that they're not so quiet. My Delonghi can run in "sleep mode" (whisper quiet) which is convenient for stealth when it's running in a closet 24 hours during flower.

From what I glean here, for three small plants I should be okay. Then again, I'm a noob :dunce:, so, if anyone thinks I'm way off the mark, I'll definitely be happy to hear from you!

Good luck with your idea... when flowering comes around mainly week 4- harvest and your closet stinks so much that it begins to permeate through the wall... come back and ask us again how you control odors!!

You know, there are as many ways to tackle the hurdles of growing as there are growers. You gotta find what works for you and it sounds like you might be on the right track. Whether or not it will be enough remains to be seen. If not, you can try something else at that point. While I do agree with PapaSmoke that if you can spend the money right the first time, you save in the long run, but I also know that some times that just isn't possible. I slowly gathered supplies over a 6 month period before starting my first grow because a few dollars a week was all I had.

The most important thing I've learned from this board is that there are wrong ways to do things, but there is no one RIGHT way. What's going to be right for your grow will depend on a thousand variable factors (geographical climate, water pH, supplies availability and variety, personal habits, personal pets and other belongings in the grow environment, cooking habits, and on and on and on)...not to mention plain old personal skills and abilities.

You've discovered a problem -- strong odor
You've approached it with known combatants -- air cleaners

It's not the wrong answer...the solution fits the symptoms...the only question remaining is will it be enough and only time will answer that question.

Good luck with it and let us know how the Delonghi's work out. Maybe I'll get one if it works for you!

Thanks blue. I'll certainly share the knowledge once I know for sure.

papasmoke, I understand that the plants will smell, but c'mon -- a HEPA air purifier, with built-in carbon filter, plus odor absorbing gels can't beat it... but a single fan with in-line carbon scrubber can??

Anyway, I'm sure the smell doesn't puff up all at once... If my plants make it that far and my approach doesn't work, I'll get the carbon scrubber with in-line fan & sit it on a shelf in my closet. (and hope the noise doesn't give me away).

If you hang it, it will make less noise than having it sitting on a shelf.

my first completed grow was one plant, terribly done (5grams total)... all i had to mask the smell was a air freshener gell... it worked

second completed grow, cfls, like the first one.. was 72 grams.. decently done...smell was manageable but if someone with a fresh nose, walked in the house, they could smell it faintly.. i had used LOTS of fabreeze, Hogwash (organic air purifying spray THAT REALLY REALLY REALLY WORKS.. but not for extended periods of time) and i would have to spray the whole house before i left for work and when i came back from work.. it was all cool UNTIL i had to break it down into grams.... no amount of the shit that i had would save me from the smell..lol.. it was EVERYWHERE.. i had to open all the windows, put towels under the doors of the rooms i was tryna keep the smell out, and turn the exhaust fan in the kitchen on.....

moral of the story is.... get a scrubber

Good luck Rookie!! Thats all I can say, I hope it works for what your doing and thats great if it does, but I am not the only one telling you and every other newbie asking how to mask smell, a carbon scrubber works the best!! I wish you all the best in your grow I truly do.....I have 10 years of growing experience....you dont think I haven't tried a few cheap ways myself....I'm not offering advice to be a dick or prove anyone wrong I am simply speaking from experience.

PapaSmoke have you tried the ONA gel / soil mist / fan trick yet? I am wondering how this will stack up against a Scrubber... I will also be having 2 plants and need to contain the smell to ONLY the grow cabinet.

Nothing can compare to a carbon filter...that's kinda why we all use them ;) Theyre 100% effective, you just hang it up and that's that.

Why do people keep asking and ignoring the advice people are giving? I'm also gonna assume that the people trying to dodge buying filters also don't have proper ventilation, right?

Pay the money once, get the job done properly (instead of half assed) and forget about smell forever...how do people not see the logic?

I know I for one, have no ventilation system. I'm growing in a closet in an apartment, so I really can't vent to anywhere. The reason I am dodging buying or building a carbon filter is due to lack of funds.

I remember when I used to grow in my bedroom with no filter. My gf had to leave her work clothes outside so they wouldn't reek of weed from being in the same room overnight. It permeates EVERYTHING and nothing will mask it.

Why not just get a small carbon filter with inline fan and just hang them in your closet? You don't NEED to vent them to outside unless you're using the fan to cool the space too. A filter/fan combo will scrub the air regardless.

Hope this helps.
This is the ticket. It is the right way to do it. I grew in my attic once with no filter. The stink got picked up by the heater and just filled the house 24/7. Fucking stressful for 2 months. I know better now and I have my card so I am legal. Plenty of reasons to not want people to know your grow is there. First is thieves then cops etc. anyway, it will be worth the money!

At the very least it can move the heat from your actual grow space into the rest of the room, less direct heat. I know I said it before, but you should pickup a small tent too...make your grow super sneeky and with a ventilation system/carbon filter you'll have no smell, no light leaks, no problems.
