I never use hard metal in my piece. Get skewer sticks, toothpicks, Q-tips, nylon pipe brushes, some Goof-Off tm., and a piece of plumbers solder, wire solder, sand, and a plastic bowl.. The solder is bendable, and works good as a scraper. No, the lead won't poison you, it's not enough, and you're washing the thing. Think.
You can warm the bowl with a lighter, or just smoke one out of it first. Goof-Off is extremely flammable, don't fuck yourself up. The warmth of the bowl it makes the resin softer. Start by getting what you can reach. Try blowing through each opening first, make sure to have a couple pieces of paper to catch the flying resin balls. You can get most of it out this way.
You might have to get a little bit creative with bending the solder pieces, but it's self explanatory.
!!! NEVER USE ANY PART OF A GLASS FOR LEVERAGE AT ANY TIME !!!
Glass really doesn't like that.
Once you have warmed and blown or dug as much resin as you can, completely submerge the piece in a plastic bowl (that you can never get clean again BTW...) full of lukewarm water. Never get a hot bowl wet in cold water, or vice versa, they don't like that either.
Nuke it. Yep, in the microwave for a few. It just needs to boil for a minute or so. (It's going to stink kids).
It's going to be hot as fuck, but take it out and put the piece on a towel, or paper towels. It should now be almost done.
You can use a metal bowl screen to catch the resin that's in the microwaveable safe bowl.
Try to blow it out while it's warm. Don't use Duster, it's cold!. If there is anything left in the bowl at this point, you should be able to reach it with the solder, or nylon pipe bristle brushes. I don't like pipe cleaners, the way they are cut, leaves a very sharp edge on the wire.
Once the piece cools, drop a bit of sand inside, and fill it about half way with Goof-Off. Plug the holes with your fingers and shake the fuck out of it. The solvent and sand will clean up anything left inside, although on some complex pieces, it can get a little stubborn.
Worse case, let the piece set overnight in the Goof-Off.
Now, you have a clean piece, but it has been washed in a solvent. Rinse it out in hot water, letting it flow all the sand out of the pipe. Squirt some Dawn dish soap into the piece, (it looks cool too), getting it on every part inside, then rinse it under hot water until clean.
Towel dry.
It will be clean enough at this point, to be returned to the store, or mailed to somewhere without worry.
