How to defoliate plant properly

I only ever really defoliate in the 3rd week of flower and I don't take too much. I know some people bang in about solar panels blah blah. But I always get bigger yields doing it.

One of my worst runs was leaving them all on and not trimming.

Why? Is it because they blocked light to the colas?

I guess so. I don't really know why. All I know is that when I trim back I def get more yield.

I tend to go for the big fan leaves, where the stalks have changed colour from green to more brown. I was taught that they are no longer as important. But always leave the newer ones that were still growing.
