How to Top Plants?

If you want to increase yield by topping, u should top early in the veg cycle and give them 4 weeks of veg so that the branches get huge. I used to top 1 week prior to flowering and yes u do get 2 decent colas, but I let them veg for an extra 4 weeks and I get 4 massive colas, I veg in total of 8 weeks and 8 weeks flower and my planst get to 4 ft tall.

I don't see why you can't top after initiating flowering...The plant keeps growing and two or more cola's will result from topping anyways...

plant will waste energy healing and developing these new side colas when it should be focusing on buds

and! when i top i notice the plant seems stressed for 2-4 days afterwards. you dont want to stress you plant when its flowering.... common sense, keep you plant happy all the time and it will reward you. stressing it slows down processes and temporarily stunts the growth... not for during flowering

So this is my first grow and I forgot to top my plants at the first week of the flowering phase... my friend tells me that I should top them now after 2 weeks... I don't think I should there's already small buds present on the top.. what do you guys think?

I think that far in is a big no no. You don't want to stress your plant out. I agree with the majority here about topping during veg stage. If you top any later you will risk a stunted beginning making your yield smaller in the end.

very much agree with billy and dj just doesnt make sense to stress your plants so hard while flowering...your goal ( i assume ) is to get as much bud as possiable hence why you would want to top.. the method will certainly get you more bud but you will definitly limit its potential by not doing it early enough...2-4 weeeks before flowering top and it will give you its maximum yield off each stem....

doesnt it depend on the strain like white widow is good left untopped and the strain blueberry needs to be topped and or fimmed to produce good yield. at present i am growing blueberry and im in to the second week flowering i have topped for a second time as an experiment i originally topped at weeks 4 veg then left ten days to recover they streched in the 2 week flowering period so i topped again i will proberbly flower these to 10 weekd let me know what you think guys

does anyone have a diagram of how to top correctly? and also what does it do make your plant get wider instead of taller?
Lol dude read the damn post!

A couple of guys very nicely posted 2 or 3 total guides to topping/FIMing

Topping directs growth to the branches on the sides rather than the main stalk that will grow vertically...

Also you can get 2-4 MAIN colas where there was only 1 before.

what up my fellow growers. i am a first time grower and i think that i am doin way to much to be a virgin. but i am doing good i must say, well i was until i tried to top my plant now i think im in a pickle. i am growin from soil in my in my basement. but since i have top her theres no more progress i should say.she still is growing on her stock but now i have sicker looking leafs which i never had and she is just curlng up at the top. is there anything else i can do. i top her goin on two weeks ago now and she is 2mths. help please.

Damn, why are you guys making this question so hard???

Answer: Topping should be done either way in veg, this way your baby can adjust and begin to grow with two main colas. When you top your plant it is going to stun your plants growth for about 1-2 tops. After this your plant will continue it's normal growth. I personally would never top in the beginning of 12/12, because like I said, the plants growth will be stunned for about 1-2 weeks. Now why would you want to slow you plants growth for that long into flowering??? Ya, you got me! I read somewhere in this forum that someone topped their babies with their index finger and thumb, this is just the way I do it. When I began growing as a "NOOB" I would do the whole nine, razor blade cleaned with alcohol and I later realized this did nothing when topping. Now if we were talking about taking clones, then the whole "Nine" is very important.

Other than that topping is very simple. Pinch the growth off (PINCH:the fragile stem) right at the top of your plant where the nodes (NODES:Where two leaves meet on main stem) meet and a new shoot is coming out. By doing this you end up with two main colas. Also, growth from every node on your baby is going to explode with new growth. Be careful, and make sure you pinch the "stem" or you might have just fimmed her, but this is another subject.

I prefer to top my babies when they have about 6 nodes, but this is depending on what I am doing with my babies, sog, scrog or bushes ect ect.

Just to add, I seen in this post that someone questioned what VEGG was, damn if you dont know what that is, DO SOME RESEARCH!!!!! PEACE!!!
