How to Turn a PC Fan into an Exhaust or Intake Fan?

Yeah I got everything running to one of those surge protectors (power strip) with the on/off switch. Thats how I normally shut everything down lol. I had never even thought about how I was going to activate the "on"button lol. Good lookin! Yeah you're right too, no switch on the power supply unit. So I need to jump the black wire to the green wire while the unit is unplugged from the power strip correct? Do I need to leave these connected forever or just touch them together briefly? Then simply plug it in and all should be cool?
I cant wait till the postman delivers the fan controller! :-)
Thanks a million for the info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes! Unplug it before you do anything.

You could do a switch of some kind between the green and a black wire as Eddie suggests as well. I just put a paper clip between them then taped it with some electrical tape so it's "always on".

Yeah thats what I was getting at lol! I was trying to see if I could simply leave them connected in a "always on" state. Thats what I'll do too then like you said earlier I can just use the timer on my power strip to control the on/off times. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!! :leaf:

Hey guys i remember seeing a diagram or something. But its basically how to wire up fans in a certain way ( parralel or series ) or something to go into one plug. and run at full voltage ( of the plug ) could someone shift me to the direction of a diagram of this? or possibly tell me how to do it. I have 2 fans. One smaller and one bigger. i can get them to individually work but i want to get both to the same plug. Another thing is i should use the smaller one as the intake shouldnt i. and the bigger as exhaust.

peace

I'm not sure you could run them like that. I'm not an electrician but I'd guess the bigger fan will require more power to run it so if you had both fans inline I'd guess you'd end up blowing up the smaller fan.

I'd pick up one of these:

And just use it like I use mine. It's cheap and you could run several fans of different sizes on it.

This a very good thread that I will keep in my favorites. The micro growing and cabinet grows are getting popular. I get questions all the time on fans, adapters etc. The above posts will help answer a few questions. If you are stripping out an old PC for parts or making it your grow spot you are on the right page. Here is a list of things you might want to consider when purchasing fans, etc.

If you are searching newegg or ebay you can list by CFM, size and noise level.

I searched a few fans and saw they vary from 80cfm to almost 150cfm, but check your noise levels and max rpms. Also you don't want lighted fans in your room during flower time, so cut the LED wire! How many fans do you need? Depends on what you are venting. Better to over do it and add an adjustable fan controller, you can control rpms, thus cutting down the noise. I recommend using a PC power supply. Yes more space taken up but you can safely add multiple fans.

Here are some ideas...

Simply Jumper Pin 14 ( which is the green wire) to any of the ground pins which are 3,5,7,13,15,16,17 ( all which have a black wire). I use a paperclip to do so, just stick the paperclip into the connector like you would be pluging it into the motherboard. If you don't have a on/off switch on the back of the powersupply you can add a toggle switch between the green and a black.

+ rep good info!!:bigjoint:

well...I apparently have an ac/dc adapter with 18V dc output. my fan is only 12V....I'm no electrician, but I'm really guessing I'm going to fry my fan if I use this adapter. Any thoughts?

Hello all, I have been working on this project with a spare coolermaster 120mm fan I had lying around...except it has annoying blue leds... so I am wondering if anyone else has had to deal with this and if you dealt with it safely. Thank you.
