How were most of your previous jobs acquired?

I'm mainly wondering the ratio between jobs obtained through networked connections (your cousin, friend, aunt, etc. got you the job) and jobs obtained through your resume/job application alone

About 75% of the jobs I've had were obtained through a friend or relative without much further consideration, none of these jobs were much more than minimum wage

I'd assume as you get deeper into the corporate/professional world what's written down on paper probably matters more, having said that, if you decide to answer the question, it might help to add where on the corporate ladder the job would fall (seasonal, part/full time, management, corporate, etc.)

Half were applications to job listings, a few from craigslist job postings, one was friend of a friend, newest one was from freelance work.

persistence, work ethic, and marijuana landed me the only GOOD jobs i've had

Craigslist, or a newspaper in the older days. Well-worded cover letter. A decent resume. Minimal effort overall. But, so important, PRESENCE at the interview... simply being in the moment with the interviewer... Every single job I've had, has been attained this way.

I have no college degree, and did not graduate high school. I have never had trouble finding work, when I've genuinely sought it.

The only times I have not been able to find work were times when I did not really want a job but was going through the motions of finding one to appease others.

I'm not even a highschool grad either. (didn't want to express that)

presence in the interview, and diligence, is great advice!

constantly being on it, running from place to place asking for a job, interviews, 5 months so far nothing. just keep at it. resume,dress well, and talking yourself up is always good.

Honestly God has just handed me all my jobs.

If it wasnt for Him I'd be a nothing. I run a 10 million a year home building company with 6 high school credits :) I;ve had great jobs all my life & I can honestly say I havent deserved any of them. I got a 100k a year job one time because the local paper posted a letter I wrote them & the guy who owned the comany thathired me happened to be driving through town & read the paper in the dinner type thing. He had his secretary find me. The compnay I got hired by is located abut 300 miles from where I life so its pretty hard to think there wasnt someone looking out for me on that one.

Even my current job I was just in the right place at the rigth time with the correct attitude. Lol.. I had NEVER built a house in my life when I was hired here.. Ran out to Chapters & bought a book on it after they hired me. Still sitting on my desk. 2 years after being hired as a site super I was promoted to GM.

To borrow a term from Rush, Talent on loan from God. I have no abilities wihtout Him, but with Him there's nothing we can't do.

How about:- 'who you know and not what you know' ? So, that's my answer.

Which ironically makes me wonder if you will get a job out of this? :)

best job I ever had (~$60k/year) was a direct plug in from an old friend. Come to think of it though, so were most of the shitty jobs I've had. I guess the lesson here is don't ask your broke ass friends to help you find a job!
