How's My DIY Cool Tube? (PIX)

Just got my Bake-A-Round and rushed to Home Depot.

I had no real structured way of putting this together other than the ideas I got from my fellow friends here at RIU:wink:.

My question is: Is it okay just to have exhaust out ONLY, opposed to having it come in and out? As you can see from my pix, I have no real room for air intake by the bulb socket.

Thanx Guyz! I appreciate the feedback. It took tons of zip ties to stop it from tilting up and down after I finally got the socket screwed in. lol Had me 2nd guessing it for a minute, but I managed to make it happen.

Thats great man but you defeated the purpose, i don't see how you are going to allow any air flow with that set-up. You need to allow maximum air flow around the bulb, try mounting just the socket to a piece of aluminum in a short piece of rigid ducting and attaching that to the pyrex tube. :peace:
Your current set up will not work.

that was the idea I originally tried to go with but the retarded fux at the Home Depot acted like they couldn't find me a strip of metal/aluminum with a hole every inch or so. I found a 100 ft. roll of something where the duct supplies were but it was soft aluminum and the other thing I found was a long barely bendable metal strip but it had an awkward pattern of holes on it and from the looks of it, it wouldnt work.

I plan on turning my dresser into a incogNEGRO stealth-type grow box with a huge PC Fan sucking the heat out of the tube. The bulb is a 400w HPS. Still not enough air exhaust?

How bout if I drill holes around the plastic at the base of the socket and have the exhaust suck the air mixture with heat out? Still wouldnt work?

No not enough, you need more airflow to effectively cool that tube. Even if you hooked a 600 CFM blower to that those small holes would restrict air low too much to cool that light. I'm sure you have powered that one up it gets HOT!!
If the retards a home depot can't do it pick up a 4" booster fan and gut it, take out the fan, motor, ect. You can mount the socket to the aluminum that the fan motor was originally on. That is what I did I had an old 4" booster fan that died and I gutted it and attached the socket to the inside. The tube will slide right in too. Thats wassup! It sound way more simple than the sh!t I already accomplished. lol I called myself trying to clone the already put together cool tube I saw in the hydro store, but got stuck when I couldn't find a piece of metal to mount it to.

having built various versions of the homemade cooltbue with a bake-a-round, i've learned a couple things...

to attach the socket i use pipe strapping... with a 400w bulb and the pipe strapping its still more resistance than i would like, but now with a 200w centrifugal fan i'm finally getting the airmovement and cooling i'm looking for...

love the thing though... i still need to get a reflector figured out for it (i highly suggest you do the same) because using the glass does lose some lumens, so the more you can get reflected downwards the better... next time through HD pick up some polished aluminum and make yourself a batwing to attach to it =]

i would take that inlet side where the lamp connects and drill as many holes as possible through it so air passes.
this is my problem with bake a rounds they are just way too small to be useful!i

this is incorrect if you are not letting air in the fan will work harder and will die on you.
if your fan can not pull fresh air through you have a problem.
it will not cool
matter of fact due to the small diameter of the B-A-R you wont get any effect without pulling lots of air

I have to agree w/ NG your current set up will not be enough airflow around the bulb. the metal strips you are looking for will be in the masonry dept. of home depot. (brick tie downs)

When I went to Home Depot about a week or so ago, I bought this. However, its very wide and i figured it may not work. What do you guys think? The measurements are 18"x1.25". One thing I did like about it, is that it has those big holes to feed my wires through opposed to around the metal.




oh... and let me know if I am getting on anyones nerves asking all these questions. lol It's my first time.
