isnt a hps conversion bulb just a hps that can be use with a MH fixture?
You dont need conversion bulbs if you have a hps ballast as you can run a MH or HPS bulb in the same lamp as long as the lamps wattage does not exceed the ballasts capacity.

Okay is a HPS conversion just as good as a regular HPS? why or why not?

What I'm using does not change this answer. The answer will determine what I will be using. Thank you.

So I can plug a 400w hps into my 400w mh ballast? What's the point of conversion bulbs and switchable ballasts then?

The other way around. If you have an HPS ballast you can use a mh bulb in the same light.
There is a video about this. Let me know if you cant find it on youtube as its there.

The ballast is actually THE SAME. But HPS bulbs need a starter, MH do not. So you can plug a MH bulb into a HPS ballast (with starter), but not the other way round. These switchable ballasts just switch out the starter for MH bulbs, but it doesn´t matter if you leave it in.

the only difference that i've noticed in conversion bulbs vs. regular bulbs is a lot of times with conversion bulbs, the lumen output is a lil lower than that of a regular, non conversion style bulb.. i am running an hps conversion bulb in my 250 mh hood/ ballast, and it works great for my purposes.. the only downside, like i said, is a slight decrease in lumen output over a non conversion bulb of the same wattage.

Okay, so you have a HPS+MH light kit? That allows you to switch the bulbs out for vegetative/flowering stages. If you bought this type of system then yes you can swap the bulbs around, just make sure to flip the switch on the ballast (mine has a HPS/MH switch) just dont throw in different size bulbs that aren't fit for that system such as you have a 600watt system and u throw in a 1000watt bulb
