HPs cool tube ? anyone who has one

you can flower with t5,s,ive never seen a finished harvest under t5s only to see the gram per watt ratio and how tight the buds are,but there are some t5,s growing right now,but i havent seen one finished up,i only lasted 4 weeks under the t5s in flowering then swithched to the 600.but they do work the t5s and that might be your answer.but there is no substitute for hps, they have been doing it for ever and still are,you can pick up a 400 for a 120 dollars,im not sure of the price of the cool tubes though, but ive probably smoked the cost of one in one night many many times.i could be wrong there might be a strait t5 grow start to finish,i know mattso used t5s but he also had an hps.so just read back through the journals.

I was thinking about the difference in efficiency you'd get by using a 400w with a cool tube vs a 1000w without one. IF you put your 1000w 12" away from your plants you'd get 45,563 lumens and you'd probably burn them good. By using a cool tube and a 400w, you could put them 5" away from the plants and double the lumens ...and not have to worry about frying your plants. I gotta make me oneuhdeese.

If your space is small I think T-5 would be the best bet. A lot less trouble over all, less heat, thinner housing, & plants can be a lot closer so your plants can be taller = more yield. You can get T-5s for $69 at HTG Supply. HPS system really heat the place up unless you've got a way to control it and that takes room.

ok well ive looked into all 3 options... so far ive herd that the hps cooltube "should" be cool enough to run in my space. no real 100% backing thou..... ive checked out the T5 systems and they seem overpriced. the ones that put out 30,000 are 400$ the ones that are 150-200$(same as hps) only put out 20,000 compared to the hps's 55,000 lumens
so they seem horrible inefficient for the money as for the enviorlite... they look good... im not sure a 125 watt bulb can put out 12,000 lumens. but they look good and are 20$ something a peice so i was thinking the Hps or the Enviorlight are my best bet.
im not 100% sure on the hps. people seem skeptical, seems like people are saying "it should work" but they cant say for sure as for the T5 they are double the price of the hps with only half the power. and they are about 300+ more expensive then the enviorlights with the same power. the enviorlights look good. i would have to rig up a better fixture to hold them thou and im not sure about there quality/effectiveness

any opinions are good, facts are better ( i will look around for threads concerning hps cool tube tommorow) i plan on studying all day anyway :( fucking exams
thanks for all the help people

I'd say that you wouldnt solve much with the cool tube. 3' is simply not enough feet to grow plants from seedling to big kolas. unless you have a rare dwarf reuteralis, plants will need to have more than a 3 foot space. and factor in the fixture itself, that only leaves you with 2-2.5 feet for them to do their thing. but, i have seen it where that plants have been trained out to make like a grid only 1 foot high. but that would take a lot of work. if your interested in trying it, send me a message and i can help.

Here's a good t-5 journel . 3' is not enough room for hps, t-gs or cfls are your best bet. cfls are a lot cheaper than t-5s but you'll get better results with the t-5s. My grow room is in a small room in my basement its probaly 15'x5'x8'. When I run just my floros I need a small heater this time of year but when the 400 watt hps is on I don't need a heater. Come spring I'll have to build me one of those cool tubes or the room will be to hot.

isnt there pics of johnny blunts plants touching the cool tube 400 or 600 you might want to check that out.

My little grow room is only 4' tall, and I am running a 400W HPS with a cool tube. I have it on 24/0 right now (for the past 2 weeks or so) and heat doesn't seem to be too much of a problem. My ambient temps stay in the mid to high 70s most of the time. As far as how close the plants can get to the light, it all depends on the ventilation. I think it was GardenKnowm who once said something about how you could put a 1000W up your ass if you had enough airflow. I have one 250cfm inline fan from Lowe's. The glass stays pretty cool, but I wouldn't want any plants to be touching it directly. What you really need to worry about is really getting your LST chops down. My cooltube is 6" thick. Add about 2 more inches for the hooks on the cooltube and the hanging hooks on the ceiling. Take off another 6" or more for pots (I know you are not even considering hydro in this space, right?) and that takes you down right under 2 feet. That is not a lot of room.

So, yes, it is possible. Have you considered a ScrOG? I think this may be your best chance for success.

S-Town

3 feet is not alot of height even for cfls, ive seen guys use 400,s with cool tubes and the plants touching the glass.

I've a cool tube...1 fan(6" inline) on one side connected by 6" ducting (200+ cfm) and I can easily touch the cool tube with it only being slightly warm. (250hps).

"how close would plants be able to get to the light?" <- They could probably wrap around the light and not get hot enough to burn.

Yeah, the builder shows a pic of himself holding the glass after it's been on for 6 hours and he said it was about as warm as the top of your dryer after a load of clothes.

im prolly not gonna go with the t-5 simply because its 400+ shipping i am currently in college and i dont got tons of money , as for the envoirlights i am still considering 2-3 of those and i got 30-40,000 lumens and there specialized for growing, again im not 100% sure about that info. as for the hps i wouldent wanna buy or try to make a "liquid cooled thing" cuz the ones they sell are 400$+ and i wouldent trust myself building a chamber out of glass around a bulb which cant come in contact with even a drop of water without blowing up, but if a regular cooltube was an option i wouldent mind using that. these people above say cooltube "should work" and the last few people who posted say it wouldent... so.. im at a delema,

A cool tube will work man. I'm just saying you'll be giving up more space for it than a t-5 setup. You can get a 4 light t-5 for around $130 from HTG Supply. It'll give you a little more room in your closet. Considering the fact that you are doing a stealth grow, from the looks of your setup, a t-5 would mean less noise as well. I would of went with a t-5 myself but I have the room to grow taller so I went for the penetrating power of the hps.

noise ? and also the hps is only 6 inches wide and like 2 ft long ? so my plants can actully touch the ceiling at 75% of the grow room if i got a t5( the one you mentioned) it would have only half the lumens and would take up a majority of the roof. but it would only be 2-3 inches of wasted vertical space so it would save me 3 inches of space on 25% of the grow room , i fuigre it would be about the same , what noise factor does the hps have ? the ballast? and if so aprox how loud would it be ?

The fans cooling the light is what i think would make the most noise but you may be able to find quit fans. The light it's self is not really loud but hums a little. If you could keep the ballast out of the grow cabinet that would also help with the temperatures because it gets pretty warm. Good luck man I know the lighting system is a tough choice & either way you'll have great results with a little bit of practice. :joint:
