Hps distance

I'm trying to figure where to put my Hps setup and can anyone tell me an average distance you would keep the light from the plants? Trying to figure out how tall of room I need. I'm going to be using a 400 watt if that helps

Depends whether its cooled or not. I was at the hydro store this morning looking at a 1000w water cooled light with chiller. The owner told me you can put it so close it will actually bleech the top of the plant white before it burns it. Anyway, start em off at 24" to 30" or so and lower them gradually to the point when you can hold your hand at the top of the plant for 60 seconds without it being too hot.

damn how much was that 1000 watt bulb going for?
