HPS-Internal Ballast

Hello all,

I've been looking around for sometime and I cannot seem to find anything on this.. Is there such thing as an HPS that can use an internal ballast, rather than needing an entire external ballast along with a hood?

tl;dr - For a budget to avoid the external ballast and hood, are there stand alone HPS I can hook up into a socket, then to the wall?

yeah man, and apparently you haven't even tried look around... because everyone knows that there are a TON of internal ballast HPS lights out there on the market... so you must not have looked very hard..

I actually started out with an internal ballast unit.. however, just last week I ordered an external ballast unit. I did it because the internal units.. once they get about a year old.. the buzz from the ballast actually starts getting noisy while the lamp is turned on. I actually fixed the problem though.. I took my HPS lamp apart last night after lights off time came for my ladies. I took it apart.. and came to find out that its not even that big of an issue really. Just, whoever put this thing together.. that person didn't do a good job.. left some screws/bolts that hold the ballast in place (from moving around) loose enough that after about a year of usage.. it started rattling and making noises. All I did was tighten up every bolt/nut/screw I could see with my eyes.. plugged it in to test it out and sure enough she purrrrs like a kitten. No noises at all..

Normally, I would go ahead and cancel the new lamp/ballast I bought. But, since I wanted to eventually upgrade anyways.. I might as well just go ahead and let it be delivered and keep it.

These are great, the units. Unforuntley they are a bit pricey for me at the moment. Basically, I wondering if you can get something like how a CFL can hook up directly to a wall socket, with an adapter. I have a hood I can use, can HPS do that?

Not gonna happen. HID's require ballasts and ignitors. You could get away with no hood, and do a vertical bare bulb grow, but that's about it.
