Yes shrroms just need a small amount of light. Like just enough to barely be visible to cue the pin heads to start growing.

it will basically be sitting in a box next to a grow, not direct. i gave away a perfect cfl, dont have one, will hps be an ok spectrum? i ask because its more red light than blue??

Your probably good, im no expert but i read as long as you have enough light to read a book, you have enough to grow shrooms. The same place didnt specify 6500k, but im sure it would be better.

I do not know about that. I hope not to be booted from this site, but shroomtalk is the place to go for those questions. Expert advice, no attitudes!!

A pinprick of light is all that is needed.

That being said the position of the light is important (if you want nice looking fungi) Light must be directly overhead as they grow towards the light.

I honestly think the HPS is overkill and might even be problematic. I would use it for a few minutes to trigger pinning when my stuff is all colonised though.

um i guess ive heard they call for about 3 hours of light, so, if theres a 12 hr light cycle going on in a single bedroom of farm fun, and the box has all these air holes in it, the box should be hidden in the dark the whole time and just take it out for the 3 hrs? is it like weed where too much light or not sticking to the schedule is a bad thing?

Its just not needed, they don't use light energy to produce food and grow.
Light just causes hormonal trigers and guids the fruit to grow upwards.
as long as there is some light, even just from a window, they are fine.
Too little light and you get these scarwny longstemmed jobbies that lie ontheir side in the horse shit.

sorry to hear about the horseshit escapade of that scrawny boomer... i am hoping for a peaceful co existence of shroom and plant... my room is on 12/12 and this box would be in the corner, is the vote to shade them from some of the 12 hr of light and put them on for like 3 hrs?
