hps lighting issue!!!!

just bought a 600w hps light hood and ballast...off craigslist... paid 150 for everything so no wonder as to why im having issues....go figure... but i put the hps bulb on first and it started up just fine and was working for about 10min then i notices a very slight flickering.. then the bulb shut off but was still glowing then turned back on about 10sec later.. then about 10min later it did the same thing...shut off then turned rate back on.. any idea as to why it doing this? ballast, bulb, or socket?

the ballast at our loco hydro is 215...and if im gonna buy another ballast i might as well buy another bulb also... just cuz its nice to replace em and i dont know how old this bulb is

Sounds like a faulty ballast but it may also be the bulb. It would be cheaper to buy a new lamp and test it before buying a new ballast.

This is why I prefer not to buy used electronics, people dont' just get rid of perfectly servicable equipment.

I got my 600W MH/HPS (entry level) from ebay, less than $200 to my door.

Some people do, like if it's stolen or their parents caught them growing and they have to sell all their stuff now. Seems like there's always people on their selling "complete" setups, probably bought all the stuff and then gave up out of frustration or paranoia.

Or they're selling it cause it's broke, who the fuck knows, lol. Gotta love craigslist.

True, but as far as I'm concerned, it's the exception, not the rule.

It's like buying a used Sports Bike, you just know that the rear end has been beat to shit, and you're going to have problems.

You could have bought a brand new one on amazon for 160 delivered.

With that said take the case apart on the ballast and look for debris, cat hair etc and look for lose connections. Also check the plug connection out they get moisture in them and sometimes you need to clean the contact up. Also unscrew the bulb and look in the socket for any type of corosion.

UNPLUG FROM WALL BEFORE YOU DO ANY OF THESE THREE THINGS

that is the capacitor going bad
u can replace it for under $10 bucks

Is this a Magnetic ballast? It sounds like it could be the ignitor or the capacitor
its the capacitor most likely
very simple fix
but before u remove bridge the terminals on the cap with a rubber handle screwdriver they can store a charge that will zap u
