HPS & MH Good Question

Now, I ask you for vegetative growth is it better me to use my 2 1000watt Metal Halide bulbs or is it better to use my 1 1000watt MH combined with 1 1000watt HPS to simulate, as closely as I can, the rays of the sun? Any info would be very much appreciated.

Mh during flowering will produce shorter, bushier plants while using a HPS will initiate stretching that plants go through in their natural cycle as the days become shorter and the sun is red

i just took some good photos that show the difference.... we didn't partition off or anything, but the bigger plant was closest to an MH all its veg-life, and the smaller one was closest to an HPS:

the mh girl:

the hps girl:

note: we moved them to the same spot in the room to take the pics with, as you can see the mh girl is still standing just fine, where the hps girl is doing a bit of a lean because of the jostling when we moved her.

Wow that is interesting, so obviously just MH alone is better for vegging. Was the same strain used in the comparison btw the MH and HPS?
Thank you you everybody for your helpful insight and advise!

for vegging, right now we have 3 t5's and 2 kw mh's and the t5's even did better than the hps for veg. although i'd probably never flower under only t5's, they're rockin it for veg also.

definitely.
they're doing better since we switched out the hps, but i can still tell which 6 were closest to it compared to the others. i can't be an accident that my favourite 2 plants spend most of their time in the farthest corner from it.

although we're still all about the hps for bloomtime.

Great info and thank you very much!
On my way to get MH bulbs, shopping now...
I heard there are different types of MH bulbs,
some with more lumens and things. Can anybody direct me
to the best kind of 1000watt MH for output.and blue spectrum?

personally, if you're working with 2 ballasts, i'd get one of each.

the mh kicks ass at veg, but the hps is really where it's AT for flowering (or a combo of the 2), which i think is the more important stage between the 2.
(hortilux makes a good mh, and i think the hps we're running right now is by phillips? sunmaster makes a solid one too.)

alternately, you could get a dual arc bulb(both spectrums), but that can be $$$.... ushio makes an awesome one but it retails for like $180.

its best to mix them when flowering , 1 mh and 1 hps
you can flower with either one ,
the red light of the hps will trigger flowering hormones ,
the blue light of the mh will make more trichs ,

The 2 ballasts I have can be used for both HPS and MH.
It looks like MH only for Veg and a combo of HPS & MH are best for triggering flowering and building more trichs.
Can all of us agree on these two methods? Plmk and thank you very much for your help and advise. : )
