so ive never vegged with hps and my current grow which i put in my 400w hps about half way thru flowering, is comming to an end. i am planing on another grow after this one but im wondering if the heat wouldnt be as good for smaller plants or what. help me out please.

I've used only floro for veg up until now but I have a new grow that I'm about 2.5 weeks into veg now. For this one I've started them on floro but plan to switch to a 250w hps at about the 1-mth mark and veg them under the hps for another 2-3 weeks until I switch to 12/12.

I would think your 400w is probably too much for seedlings unless you placed it pretty far away from the plants. I think the start with floro then switch to hps method should work pretty well and is theoretically sound.

exactly what i thought:eyesmoke:

the red spectrem will cause streatching if that's what you'r looking for good but other wise i would get as big as possible with the floro then flower u want close nodes for fat nugs

HPS are better suited for flowering. Unless you can get your hands on a metal halide or don't have a choice use the flouros for the veg cycle. They put off less heat and should cost less to run.

i think your wrong there mate , pretty sure its the blue spectrum 6500k that makes plants strectch and 2700k "red" that keeps them nice and bushy for flowering

to put is simple , HPS is the way to go if u dont veg long, it gives off alot more light then any fluros and your plants will grow faster. but if u mind the heat and power bill the crappy fluros is the way to go

I just had to grow with a HPS for Veg my MH died n my hydro shop is useless and it caused streatching so that's what happened but thats my experience

You got it backwards. Blue spectrum=less stretch: better for vegging and growing nice bushy plants with shorter internodal spacing. Red spectrum=more stretch: better for flowering and keeping the buds tighter and denser. ;-)

i just got a t5 for this grow, and i put in the veg bulbs along with one flower bulb for the first five or six weeks of veg, and the plants did great under them.. then for the next two weeks i hooked up my 250mh and used in along wth the t5 for some more veg.. i just got a conversion hps bulb for the mh, and am using that along with the flower bulbs in the t5, and everything couldn't be going better..

i did 3 weeks fluro from seedling( 2 x 55wattcfl)24/0 , straight into 600watt hps for the next 4/5weeks of vegging(18/6) and now under 1000watt hps 12/12 flowering. no problems at all. 6 plants ,organic, 4' x 4' 6.5' tent. only difference i'm gaunna make next time is running a 400mh along with the 600hps on the vegging. the results will more than cover the extra electricity cost. think i mite veg under 20/4 too. plants in 2nd week of flower all between 30" & 40", and real happy lookin.
