Theres been talk of making this the "law" so its politics.
huffpo is requiring real names to comment starting next month.
I dont post or read that trash but I'm sure some of you do.

Personally i think anonymity is what makes the internet what it is. This will be a huge lid on open speech if it goes mainstream.

On one hand it probably will cut down on mud slinging and slanderous stuff. On the other hand RIU goes dark...

The internet is the only place you can go and say whats on your mind without any worry of retribution from friends, family, coworkers or the gubment. If you have to put up your full name that all goes away.

I mean how on earth can they make you use your real name, and better yet, how can they tell what your real name is?
They going to check your birth certificate before you can post? Seems pretty un uphold able, if that's even a word..

pretty easy. require a credit card to signup.
Sure there are 1% of people that will go out of their way to get a burner card or use their cousins. But for the most part it would work.
or people would just quit posting.

Not to mention people with the same names. So I suspect that these people MUST put a self image as well?

ooh yea there you go. You need to use your passport to signup with all online portals.
Fuckit. We dont even need usernames. We can just login with SSN.

Might as well. Maybe even an eye ball recognition to sign on which means users would need a decemt web cam etc. Pfft. Lame laws are lame.

I will admit that I would like to know who El Tiberon is, but I think a law like this is a terrible idea. It will result in murder. There are a small fraction of crazy people who will feel slighted by an online argument who will murder their opponent.
