Me and a friend are taking his son snipe hunting tonight while we do some night fishing.
Man, can't wait to see the little guy bag a snipe.

Nah... I think by the time we get there he'll already be calling bullshit. He was a little skeptical when we started to show him some snipe calls.
He's a sharp kid.

We are going to stop by Cabelas and pick him up a snipe hunting license and some comouflage... some face paint, that kinda stuff..

Ok I give. So what's a snipe?
a wading bird of marshes and wet meadows, with brown camouflaged plumage, a long straight bill, and typically a drumming display flight.

A snipe hunt is a little different..
Basically, it is a drawn out practical joke on the victim. The victim is taught all about catching a snipe with a big sack and some snipe calls, maybe even a snipe walk/dance... You build it up for a week or two... Like, "we're taking johnny here on a snipe hunt next weekend"... "Oh yeah? I remember my first snipe hunt! Good luck!"

You take the victim hunting for snipe. After a little while of assisting in the hunt, you sneak away back to camp/car/whatever... You leave the victim to figure out for her/himself that it was all a joke. In some cases , you actually have to tell them that it was a joke. Usually, they figure it out themselves.

It's a rite of passage sort of thing..

I don't think it is mean. It's all in fun. Also, imo, a good lesson in spotting bullshit.
The kid is pretty into fishing.. We're going to get him setup with some nice new stuff while we pickup his snipe license. ;-)
If I thought that he would not take it well, or if he had low self-esteem, I would not be playing along.

That's just mean.
No it's about teaching youth how to lose face gracefully. It's about being able to laugh with others about yourself and about an entry into the 'group'. It's a rite of passage into incipient stages of adult abstraction. You have to learn how to handle trolling in the real world with grace and aplomb or you decamp from the field without playing or become a sad joke or worse a tool.

Oh I have to tell this story. Suffice to say neither of my parents are CA natives and they obviously lived under a rock because they thought grunion were CA snipe. So I kept asking to go grunion hunting with my friends. I was maybe 10/11 ish. Finally my parents decided to 'teach' me lesson and take me 'grunion' hunting.

I can still see their faces as I was running about tossing grunion into my pail one of my best nights ever! I was right AND I got grunion yah boi!

I never went snipe hunting when I was a kid, I would just get hit with a belt to teach me how to save face. Sometimes I would get hit with blunt objects.

Pretty effective technic, Im a pretty modest fellow. But I often flinch when I see belts.

Back when I rode ships in the Caribbean we used to stage a "Sea Bat" hunt on the flight deck during moonless nights for the newb's.
Give them a trash bag while guys in the know wielded flashlights & brooms.

Hella funny seeing someone get bowled over from a broom smack on the ass.

But now that's Hazing and highly frowned upon.
