67 is fine. Lower gives more DO, but root metabolism slows as well.. happy medium is 67-69. Drop it down to help kill root disease, is all is well, run it higher for better growth.
What gives you the impression that you're flowing 500gph though? Don't trust what the pump says on the side.. that's for like 2 feet of head or something. You're pumping water all the way to the top of your octagon I imagine, that can really decrease the flow, especially on a cheaper pump. The "gph" figure is always at some certain head pressure in small print, different for all pumps and manufactures. Watts is a better thing to look at for pump comparability.. the actually power of the pump.
If you run your pump for 30 seconds, or maybe a minute, catching the water where it pumps out at the top, you can then measure it and work out the actual GPH. I think you'll see that you'll probably want to upgrade your pump, and that a bunch more flow through those tubes is the difference between heath's success and the root rot you're experiencing.
