Hydroponic help! DFT SYSTEM

Hi all,
I made a top fed DFT system.
It has about an inch of water in the tray at all times with an air stone to keep it oxygenated.
It recycles via the overflow to the reservoir down below.
Once the roots where hanging out the bottom of the pots I covered the tray/table with plastic to stop any light from getting to the roots.
It was bottom fed, on a constant cycle.
However I had a few issues doing it like this, such as the pump heating up my water and under watering, the water can't get to the roots in the pots filled with hydroton they're too tall.
I've put a spaghetti tube in each pot to have it top fed to solve the underwatering.

HERE'S THE QUESTION.
HOW OFTEN TO I HAVE MY PUMP COME ON TO CYCLE THE WATER/SOAK THE HYDROTON IN THE POTS? I WAS THINKING MAYBE 15 MINS EVERY 2 HOURS?
THIS WILL FULLY RECYCLE TYE WATER IN THE TRAY EVERY 2 HOURS AND HOPEFULLY GIVE THE HYDROTON TIME TO BREATH? WHAT DO WE THINK WILL I DROWN MY PLANTS?

MY PH AND EC AND EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE FINE. THIS IS A WATERING ISSUE I CAN'T SEEM TO MASTER....
