Hydroponic System Help

Hey Guys, my first post and first question actually. I'm thinking about setting up a new hydroponic system however I'd like to know if my ideas would work out.

I'm looking at using a Big Boy Hydroponic System with 12-18 pots. With a 1000 watt hps light + reflector.

Would this work? The seeds I'd be using wouldn't be clones. I'm still putting things together, my system would be in a basement with white walls and I'd be using mountain water.

Exactly what is it that your unsure of.

Are you asking if you can fit that many plants under a single 1000 watt light,if so i highly doubt it unless the plants are real small.

I dont see you getting more than 6 good sized plants under that light.

12 pots under 1 1000w is not really a good idea. If you're looking for best yield look into scrog.

I figured maybe a 12 pot Big Boy Ebb & Flow System, 1000w hps light surrounded by a grow tent might be good enough. Off of this set up what would I be expecting to yield? Assuming I'd use the correct nutrients and clean water.

if you have one 1000watt, 12 plants with little or no veg (sog) will produce about the same as 6 plants would if you vegged them up some (scrog). in other words, it has more to do w having a full canopy and not so much the number of plants.

You cant look at it in terms of prospective yeilds when your a new grower, just getting thru all the different growth stages, then making it all the way till you harvest top flight dope is the task at hand.

Once you get a few grows under your belt then you will be alble to establish a harvest weight baseline.

Just so ya know harvest weights are normally gauged by light wattage,to end up with 1 gram per watt of light used is a huge accomplishment for a new grower & highly unlikely any new grower will realize yeilds that heavy.

I use 1,800 watts lighting per table & i dont pull a gram per watt,i come very close but i dont weigh popcorn buds either,if i weighed popcorn i would be over a gram per watt but these systems have been running 4 years straight.

On yer 1st grow you will be just figuring everything out so dont have high expectations,if you harvested a pound your 1st time out youd be ok.

You're right, that makes much more sense and an easier goal to accomplish. However do you suggest going with hydroponics then? Or maybe a single plant under a 600w hps light during veg and a MH light during the first phase?

You have it backwards. HPS lights are usually for flowering and MH lights are for veg. MH has a higher kelvin (4200-6500k) depending on the bulb you by. Has a lot more blue which promotes short bushy pants, i.e. good veg growth. HPS promotes tall lanky plants with long spaces between the nodes. Also it has more of a red spectrum which promotes bud growth better than MH.

Honestly, it sounds like you're rushing to grow, which usually ends up in utter failure. I say you sit back read a LOT more, look at tons of grow journals and just gather info. I don't think you should be starting out with a big ass 1k watt light. Those things put off some serious heat and require some nice cooling to stay cool. Otherwise you're just gonna end up burning your house down if you don't do it right. Start out with a 400w, grow tent and one plant. Growing hydro can be tricky and I wouldn't personally recommend it to first time growers. I say you grab a bag of Fox Farms Ocean Forest instead.
