Unfortunately, Reagan himself abandoned that commandment when running against Ford.
And it seemed to have helped him get into office.
The respect of office is something that is to be earned, not given.
And VERY few politicians earn the respect.
Mostly because they promise the moon to get elected then can't deliver on their promises because of the divided congress and senate: no one in D.C. wants to cooperate to make this country better.
They just serve their own re-election agendas, and try to satisfy backroom deals made with big money backers of their campaigns (lobbyists for PACS & other corporate interests).
It's not that they don't try to do the right thing, but the way the "rules" are in D.C. they get sucked into the evil that rules the nest over there, and we all end up suffering the consequences.
A high office doesn't mean a person deserves respect.
A high office only means the person has the duty to do the best they can to make this country more liveable for the people who voted them into office, AND for those who voted for someone else.
We need to kill the Party system in this country if we are to ever move forward.
It's just a name for a basic set of philosophies, but it also pigeon-holes people into a mindset that doesn't allow for compromise.
They should run only on the merits of their goals, agenda, and the means they wish for their vision to be accomplished.
Labeling them Dem, Repub, Indie, Green, etc., is so wrong.
How about: "American".
They need to be reminded that they are ALLOWED into seats of TEMPORARY power by the will of the people, and are there to serve us, not find ways to enslave us and oppress us.
America is also very short-sighted when it comes to goals.
Too few think past a few years down the road.
The goal is to make it easier for our progeny, not more difficult.
What will benefit the next generation? And the generation after that?
We are not put on this earth to support a heavy-handed central government.
The government is only supposed to oversee the use our pooled resources to make life better for all, not the tiny handful of schemers & scammers that continue to run (and to RUIN) this country.
We don't owe them: they owe us.
They also owe us the respect of OUR places in life, but give none at all.
They treat us like the enemy.
They treat us like children.
And they treat us like idiots.
Respect is a two-way street.
