Is “hash” an imprecise term? I’ve wondered this for years. It seems in some regions hash consists of typical whole buds compressed into bricks. I’ve never understood how growers could make such bricks out of a pile of trichomes removed from buds without it being exceptionally expensive.

No sir, hash is the exact term for trichomes harvested, heated (for activation for consumption) and compressed into brick form or rolled into “temple balls” for curing. Whole buds compressed into bricks for curing would be cob curing. Hash made from rubbing buds and then collecting that from your hands is called charas. 00 Nepalese hash is done by taking a branch and clapping your hands together with branch over a large pane of glass and then collecting those trichomes before compressing and heating. There are a couple ways to make hash… usually end product will be different grades. For most of the world where hash is prevalent, the plants grow naturally just about everywhere. In some regions they are well protected and guarded (Afghanistan) think Hindu Kush mountains. Nepal, afghan, Lebanon, roughly the same… processing may be different. In those countries, they are taking something that would otherwise be chopped and burnt by govt and taking free “waste” and making sellable product with it. When my buddy was in Afghanistan for military, he ended up with a softball sized chunk of hash from one of the native soldiers for… and get this… 2 playboy magazines! So if that don’t tell you what it’s worth over there. It’s North America and other countries that monetized the process. I can’t sell hash around my area, most think it’s junk… til they smoke it. They would rather just smoke weed. I’ll keep all the temple balls I make for myself!

Yeah if it aint decarbed it is just pressed kief theres the rubbing way the himalaya people do theres then you got dry sift method that the afghan and Moroccan folks make and use then for flower you got compressed bud or cobbing that folk in malawi traditionally do its not hash its still bud compressed or not they often ferment it a bit too thats just how they preserve it really not an attempt at making hash
