from the very beginning ive only used ocean forest from fox farm...

which is fine...but due to fox farm's high cost (about $35 shipped per bag...i use 5 gallon pots...and each bag fills about 2 5gal pots will a lil leftover...so do the math when you're talking 5-7 bags at a time)...and the fact that it runs slightly hot...or hotter than i'd like.

so im looking for a potting soil that doesnt run hot...wont break the bank and is readily available...lowes or home depot is ideal for me..

ive heard good things about promix promix bx and kellog potting soil (the white bag with purple stripes on it)

now ive seen people use promix and kellog for flowers in people's yards but never seen anyone use it for mj.

normally all i come across with other growers is mg organic (i was told to stay away from this)...fox farm...or a soil-less media (or hydro of course).

so im looking for suggestions/ideas...

fyi im still planning on using the fox farm trio of nutes (grow big, big bloom, tiger bloom).

suggestions please?

some seem to have a grudge against MG, but their MG Organic Garden is quite nice if you fix it up a bit
180 degrees for 1/2 hour to take out the fungus gnats, dolomite to cut the acidity, a dash of perlite to loosen up the wood compost soil base
price is about $7 per 1 cubic foot bag

im know i should stay away from the regular mg as it has the strong time-release nutes..

i heard organic mg is just as bad though..so idk how did mg organic work for you? i need to make a choice and buy it in the next two days...so thats why im asking.

I use Pro Mix, it's more popular here in Canada as it's made here and cheap.
I use the HP (high porosity)
I'll continue to use when I get back into growing.
Here's a recipe to convert it into an "organic" mix (bottom of the page): http://www.highgrade-seeds.com/soil.html
ive heard good things about the promix. is the high porosity one best? how has it worked for you? any ph issues?

i forgot to mention me avoiding ph issues is IMPORTANT! whats the ph of all these soils usually? how do they respond to fox farm nutes (grow big, big bloom, tiger bloom?)

I used MG/Organic choice before going hydro.
how did you like it? ever use anything else? how did it compare>?

Lava rock works out to about 50 cents a lb canadian. It can be continuously used over and over again.
lava rocks huh...interesting...never tried soiless mediums...how much different is it to use soilless mediums versus soil? any special requirements? lemme kno.

thanks guys.

you have to be a bit careful when you talk about MG Organic, because there are 2 MG Organic's- Organic Garden soil and Organic Potting soil
the Organic Garden soil is composted wood products, composted poultry litter, and peat moss, nothing else
the Organic Potting is some kind of complex mix, seen some say it has a high PH which would make me wary of it
of 5 strains i've grown with MG Organic Garden, all loved it
but it does have its quirks, get rid of fungus gnats by soil pasteurization(180 degree heat), cut the acidity with dolomite, loosen it up with perlite
i add MG bone meal(6-9-0) for slow release nitrogen/phosphorus

It costs 2.50. Has amazing aeration. Neutral and Inert. This brick is about enough to fill a 3.5 gallon bucket. Use the purple ones on the bottom of the pots and Red ones are more of a middle, since it's the mix.

EDIT: Use a brick to loosten up soil. The red ones are great for mixing.

For soiless mediums. Treat them like soil, but the difference is there are no nutrients in your soil. So you have to add them. You do this through watering them with a nutrient solution. Water with plain water then water with nutrient solution and so on.

I don't understand the hate on mg. oh wait.. you hate it because it has strong nutes..

Go call up mg and tell them that they should make their nutes weaker like the hydro companies... ie advanced nutrients and *insert weak nute company here*.

when using mg, less is more. perhaps you don't understand the ratios.

when the box of mg says 20-20-20. thats just what it is. when you use organics, its usually something like 2-1-1. if you understand this key, then you can use mg ferts perfectly without any issues.

idk, its funny to see people company how mg burns the shit out of their plants.. well if you use too much, obviously its gonna burn the shit out of your plants.. lol.

personally, I say screw soil and go hydro. get your bankroll up to 50 dollars and then you can do hydro.. hell, you could probably do hydro less than that... but thats another topic.

no what irritates me is the time-released crap mg puts in i prefer to add my ff nutes in myself...not trust mg to grow my plants.

im not switching away from fox farm strictly for the price but i do think $35 to fill 2 5gal buckets is extreme. period. $35 for a little dirt a lot...granted it has nutes to see them through the first month of growth but i could do away with that.

im just looking for something comparable to ocean forest..basically something i can just dump in...break up the clumps...pop the seed in...add water and begin growing. home depot/lowes hopefully will have what i need...

im still not sure...garden soil...or potting soil? or fruit/veg soil

if i go with kellogg which would be best?

i assume the 1st link but want clarification as i dont want to run into issues w/ my plants down the road.

3rd link i assume is similar to ocean forest correct?

basically the 1st one says it has chicken manure...worm castings...kelp meal

all 3 claim to be organic.

to use or not to use?

would it be wise to cook soil before using it? note: i never cooked ocean forest...

so any help please?

this brand seems to be one of my only choices if i dont go with fox farm or mg.
