You're absolutely sure it was male? Early flower primordia can resemble male flowers sometimes, like a little stalk with a ball on it.

Positive I have been growing for 14 years now and know a thing or 2. I spotted the male pre-flowers 5 days ago and left the plant alone until today so I could teach my brother a lil something. And it unmistakable if you know what you are looking at
