I like Trump

i attended chicago university in hyde park, far southside/south shore area.
the rougher neighborhoods were a few miles north...englewood, roseland, stoney island park...

I went to navy "A" school at great lakes in 1976 and took the train to Chicago a few times

the first time we went to the USO where a kindly little white-haired lady gave us coffee and donuts and free tickets to see Sodom and Gomorrah at an adult theatre downtown

was the theater located on rush street?

According to a song I heard, that's the baddest part of town
Ended up on West Sacramento Boulevard just a few blocks from the El. We were supposed to be in the next village or whatever to the west of Chicago but same street. In a semi. Guy yelling at us “Be in this neighborhood come sundown, you honky motherfuckers”. I considered that hospitality and an invitation but he didn’t give us an address.

sacramento blvd traverses quite a few rough streets, madison ave, lexington ave, homan ave.
that's the heart of the west side...not a very safe place in the daytime let alone the evening.

Especially for 2 white boys with a semi load of Reebok and Air Jordan basketball shoes. The first trailer load was stolen from our terminal when someone drove a tractor in, backed under it, got out and connected the electric and air lines and drove away. Yeah it was definitely da hood.

1328 West Sacramento Boulevard. The dispatcher had hand written the address. Chicago. Except it was River Oaks or some damned place just to the West. What a trip. Had to take part to Milwaukee and then the last to Romulus MI.

There's nothing dangerous about Berwyn. Hmm, the only time I was ever at Fitzgerald's was to see Adrian Belew. Used to go to women's roller derby matches there (Berwyn) though before they moved them to UIC.

As far as the West or South side goes, I have never found anything particularly dangerous about driving through as long as you mind your own business and never, ever pick any sort of fight in traffic.

We were in South Chicago. Way off our intended destination. I’ll guarantee it was not a safe place. This was like 89.

At least not safe in a loaded semi with sealed doors.

I don't doubt it. I kinda make a distinction between "safe" and "not dangerous". The most dangerous place I can think of for somebody just passing through is I-90/94 south of the loop. Horrible.
The guy with me was panicking. He was from Skokie. “You don’t understand! You’re from fucking NM. These n*****s want to kill us.!” I hated driving with him and was laughing. I’m not stupid but he acted like we were under siege.

not the best place in town to have engine problems or get a flat tire.
It isn't so much that (though you are right) as it is the drivers. People have gotten really aggressive. You don't want to stop somebody from doing something really fucking dumb. You don't want to flip somebody off when they pull some asshole maneuver like use an exit ramp to pass you. Just let them. Don't even make eye contact. Damn near every time I drive that way I see people using their cars as weapons - and they sometimes use real weapons too. It's like the social contract has vanished. Nowdays, if I am going North, I just bail on Stoney Island and head to LSD. It's a pretty shitty hood but way safer than the Dan Ryan.
