ok here is the deal. i have a cabinet that is 30inches wide X 4ft tall X 2 ft deep. i ordered a 4" inline fan & a 4"X12" Phat carbon filter for use with this. well the fan and filter are much larger than i antisipated and i need to know a good way to hook everything up. i have a good sized room the cabinet is in and i also have a closet that i could move it to... the filter has an in port but i don't think it has an out port. so do i hook the fan & filter up together with flexible ducting. can i just sit the filter on the floor in the closet and hook the fan up to it?

You can just sit the filter on the floor and hook the fan up to it.

The port on the filter is usually the exhaust port (meaning you suck filtered air from it), air is sucked in through the filter.

ok thanks... i get what you are saying... i wish i had known all this before i built my cabinet! so would i be able to use the filter the other way... push the air out through it? i really didn't leave myself enought room to put an 8" X 14" filter inside my cabinet. i could probably use the filter inside the cabinet if i was only going to grow autos, but i was hoping to grow some photoperiod plants in there this winter so i can have a mother plant to cut clones from for next summers outdoor grow. i want 6 to 12 clones for next summer....

it will work pushing air through but wont last as long as you lose use of the pre-filter on the outside of the carbon filter. that is there to filter the larger debris (dust, hair, etc), but it will still work.

you could always put the prefilter (securely) over the intake duct, i personally would be very careful and make sure it was super secure because you wouldnt want that getting sucked into your fan.

thanks for all the info guys! I think i am going to have to try that. i will put the prefilter on the "out" side of the fan so it doesn't accidentally get sucked into the fan. and i think this will work out well. i really appreciate all the help guys!

also, be prepared for the possibility of some carbon dust shooting out of it at first, might want to put it in a box when you first fire it up like that.
