I need some parts to build HLG light setup

One of my buddies just went from his dual ceramic lights to HLG leds. He made his own brackets and custom setup for a 10 x 8 room. He had some extras parts he didnt use and sold to me. So now I have 2 quantum 288 boards and I would like to build a light for my 4x4 tent. I usually only grow 3-5 at a time, so I do not need a ton of power, but would like to change out my 600W HID light and venting system with something that has at least the same power, but with less heat and maybe less cost of electricity.

I have some extra adjustable hangers already, but what parts would I need besides the ballast/power-supply and a heat sink to mount the quantum boards to?

Can you buy all the separate parts needed, or do I have to buy a full kit?

I think there is an led section somewhere in here might get more responses. You can check out rapidled for parts. I don’t think 2 boards will compare to a 600. I have a 320 watt setup with the 288s it has 3 boards. It’s an okay light but no way in hell I’d hang it instead of a 600. But then again even tho the light is bright user error on my end makes me not wanna use it. I’m not sure how much of that bad run was my fault but I can’t bring myself to flower under it again. Basically you just have to adjust your growing a little higher temps more cal
Mag. For me I mix a lot of water at once and have other tents that don’t need higher temps in them so i wasn’t able to properly utilize it.

That being said the light is bright af and other people kill with them. But your going to need more boards or even better in my opinion put the boards in the middle and cobs on the corners. Mix the light spectrum up some and buy diff color cobs than the boards.

100% user error imo. I very rarely use cal mag not sure where you are digging up this nonsense.

Umm I just said it was user error didn’t I? Also Steven from HLG and grandmaster level from hlg all talk about how plants need extra cal mag under led. In fact your the first person who grows with led I’ve seen say they don’t need it.

Doesn’t bother me any I’ll put my cmh up against qb all day.

lots of us don't use extra cal mag but I would say more people do than don't though im not sure its anything more than a band aid.

Yes you can buy all the boards separately and the heat sinks.

You want 4 boards total and two heat sinks to fit two boards on each, you can get one big heat sink but having two will allow you to raise or lower either fixture which can be handy if you grow different strains.

As an example you could get 2 more of the 288 v1 boards for $45 each

or 2 of the 288 v2 boards which are slightly more efficient for $69 each.

or 2 of the brand new R spec boards for $79 each.

2 of the slate 2 double heat sinks for $72 each.

Then you need a driver for each fixture. I would shop around for those because you will probably find them cheaper .

Thanks Cory, but I do not know which heat sink might work for the boards I have. Do they all mount on the same pre-set hole patterns? Also, do all the driver modals have pots on them, or do you have to add them in with drivers with proper wiring?

I am planing on using 1 board now just for vegging. Then later I can have 2 boards with the ability to move each to different heights like you mentioned for flowering in my 4x4.

Looking at the horticulture lighting group website...they do not show a dual board heat sink that allows for the boards to be mounted in more of a square light pattern. The one they show (slate 2) is an elongated shape with the boards being mounted lengthwise. Maybe I will have to call them directly and see if they have other heat sinks available or can custom make one for me.

The A type drivers have internal dimming which you lift a rubber cap and turn a small screw, I think its the Bs that require an external pot.

If you want to replace a 600w hps then you would need 4 boards and either the big quad heat sink or two long ones.
Your boards are genuine so you can fix them to any of HLGs heat sinks. They should all be drilled for them.
HLG did used to do a heat sink for two boards which was squarer, its called slate 2 XW (for extra wide)
However if your trying to fit into a 4x4 two standard slate 2 heat sinks with two board each is better, they alos do extra long ones but I find the standard length is perfect for mine.

The boards max at about 150w each which is why you need 4 boards.
If you wanted to run two at max then your going to have to use two single heat sinks.
Though growers lights do an xw version for two boards I don't think they sell the heat sink seperatly. You could ask HLG if they sell the XW sink even though they don't list it.
I see no benefit over two single heat sinks though.
If you chose to run only two boards at max then your going to have to work to 3x3 of your 4x4 space because its not enough to light a 4x4.
