I think my boss is afraid of losing me...

They came back with 30%.

That's cool. They still seem like they are very unsure of my commitment though. I'm happy with a raise though. I really didn't want to have to stop smoking to pass some drug tests, and learn a bunch of new peoples names, and all that jazz.

then one morning the boss came up to me and said "so what's it gonna take to keep YOU here?" kinda off the cuff and as a joke i threw out a 30% pay increase. he said "i'll be right back". he walked into the office, spoke with the co-owner (his brother) for a minute and came back out. he looks at me and says "no problem".
damnit!!!!!!! i should have asked for 50%. :cuss:

One of the first things I learned concerning negotiating for money.
Never, ever be the first to say a figure. If you do, you risk leaving money on the table.
Lots of it. :fire:

Congratulations! You keep what sounds like a job you love AND get a 30% raise when most are getting the boot. I would take less for a job I like over more for a job I hate ANY day!

The job certainly sucks at times. Occasionally a 70 hour week, or just some really terrible stuff. I fucking hate waking up at 5am and putting in 14 hour days, especially when it lands on a saturday (not usual). Or working in a steel mill. Those places are shit holes. I'm sure i've made threads about the sucky aspects of this job.

But realistically I think I am going to encounter that stuff anywhere I go, it's just part of the field i'm in.

I don't want to get any more specific for fear of people being able to identify me. If I got specific enough, and you wanted to, i'm sure you could easily figure out exactly who I am.

you're homer simpson. ;)

as good as a disguise as it is, i can see right thru it. :)

Tell them the reason they lost the other employees is that theres better money out there and they should know that, matter fact they do.
They have the resorces to find this out on their own don't let them play stupid.
I would say.....
"I feel insualted that you think I'm stupid enough to belive You Guys have no clue.
How about you just tell me what you think the going rate for my job is?????"

you can use i think salary.com or something like that, there are several databases that will give you the salary ranges of your position, market values, etc. you can google find my salary. congrats on the raise and the job, it's a tough world, keep whatever job you have until you find another :peace:

30% is pretty good and at least they were willing to compensate you for the risk that you would leave if not given a bone of some sort. Being comfortable at work and for the most part enjoying your job is huge, a job you hate is a pretty miserable existence. My past job with a large Software developer had the most incredible perks ever, game rooms with Xbox 360's, PS3's, catered lunches, a gym on site, pool tables, air hockey a basketball court, you could literally live better in this place than you would at home, biggest problem was that I practically did and despite the really cool perks and enormous salary/benefits package I absolutely hated it, 70hr weeks were pretty common and the deadlines ensured that often times you ended up putting in 16hr days.

So I quit, took a big pay cut and moved up to the Mountains, found a job here where I really don't do a whole lot, generally put in 7hr days come and go when I feel like it and it's amazing, I don't wake up throwing up everyday, I'm healthier than I have ever been and still have enough money to live a comfortable life. Money is nice to have but I have definitely learned a lesson, I would rather have less money and more time to spend it than a ton of money and no time to spend it. Maybe I'm just lazy, I don't know but oddly enough it took a pay cut to make me happy.

Yeah, then you wuld have to change your ID. Just so you know, the top hat and mustache aren't really fooling any of us.

Hey good luck man my only remark is dont price yourself out of a job your happy at.

Good advice. There's always gonna be someone to step right in and fill your shoes. The way wages have gone probably even at a lot lower salary.

I seriously doubt it. I do far more than strictly what I was hired for. I turned out to be an awesome guy that likes to drink, likes to smoke, constantly has the hook up for weed, can handle all the technical ends of everything, can handle the entire computer network, can fix and program all the computers/printers, and am just all around more intelligent than expected, and everything I put my hands on is successful. You would think something simple like the modem dying would be as simple as replacing the modem with a new one, and reconfiguring the wireless network. Easy 2 hour job including diagnosing and driving to the store to get a new modem. Things like that that take 2 hours of wages to fix, but they would probably have to hire a consultant to fix because no one in the company could figure out. I know they all have wireless internet at home, and I am befuddled by the fact that they are all unfamiliar with it. Who sets up and maintains their wireless networks at home if they don't know this stuff? I don't know, but small things like that come up all the time and I know i'm the only one in the company that can handle it. I'm sure with enough time a few of the guys could figure it out, but if you are paying a guy $70,000/yr and he is already working 50-60 hours/wk do you really want to see if he can sit down and figure that stuff out?

I've been there 5 1/2 years and they have tried to hire more engineers and they never gotten anyone of my caliber. I know they exist somewhere, but I think they are going to have a very difficult time actually hiring someone that can do everything I can, especially for the price.

Sounds like they're riding their employees to the bank. I would throw that 50% number at em and take it from there.

no wonder they are afraid of loosing him.. who wouldnt be afraid of loosing an employee you pay loose change with lol?

they are afraid if he leaves they will have to advertise a new job at a higher salary!
