Idea for building grow cabinet. 2.4x2.4 H 4.1

Hey guys and girls,

I have been reading this forum alot and like to hear your toughts and advice.

Trough my work I was able to get a cabinet for free wich I tought was interesting to build a grow cabinet.

I know it's not the biggest space to work with but after alot of browsing and reading I think it's possible.

I am not in a hurry to build, its just a fun side project to clear my head from the daily troubles. But if i build it i want to build it good!

In the top cover I'm going to place a extra sheet metal part to close of the ventilation holes.

Is it going to be a problem that its a metal casing?

4 feet is rather short but about any material can be used. I've used big cardboard boxes, foam insulation board and tents.

You keeping it indoors? 4ft is doable in my opinion.

I would throw some flat white paint or Mylar inside. Id cut in two computer fans in it and a light and you’re in business.

That is a killer cabinet. If those are metal/magnetic sides you are golden. Check out my small cab in the micro section. I have half the space you have and I was able to pull close to 6 ounces on my last run. You just need a way to do some hardcore LST.

You could also easily make it hydro if you wanted to go that route.

Those sides are all metal. The only problem I think it's going to be is that it will amplify the sound of the fans.
I was thinking about putting wood against it and then reflecting material.

The middle part of the baseplate also needs to change, its only a thin sheet of metal and would not be able to support weight.

I have zero knowledge about hydro but I will keep it in mind.


I have been reading through your topic and WoW. Thats one of the best grow cabs I have ever seen. The amount of detail and brain you put into it is an example I only can dream of to reach with this!

Thanks for the kind words. I have more fun building and modding my cab than I do growing.

Here are some tips, feel free to take them or leave them. As always, there are a million great ways to do this stuff.

In my experience I don't think your metal sides will be an issue as far as sound is concerned. Internally you will only need a few small PC-like fans for air circ. Those fans are nearly silent.

Now, if you plan on using one of those comically large, inline-fans inside of your can, you will definitely hear that. They are overkill for your box.

I recco keeping the metal sides if you can. Magnets will become your friend if you want to put in the work. You can use them for adjustable side lighting, infinitely adjustable fan(s) placement, shelf supports for mesh shelves when it comes to drying, magnetic thermometers, stickers, and most important of all in your small space......precision bonsai-style LST in every direction. Did I mention that I like metal sides?

For reflection just spray paint the entire inside matte white.

Put the entire thing on wheels if it isn't.

Your top is already open, which is perfect. Get yourself a good dimmable QB or knockoff, mount it to a sheet of acrylic or board, and have the heatsink external to the box. Most of the heat generated will remain outside. Added plus, a good QB heatsink looks badass.

Metal sides are your greatest asset but also your biggest challenge, unless you are a master of sheet metal....which I am definitely not.
