Igotdialup's First Grow CFL

I just got done looking at my plant, and well... I think it has thrips. I tried to take a few pictures, can anyone confirm this? Also what would be the cheapest and most effective way to killing them? The faq said things about neem oil.. but Id like some opinions on what other have tried.

Answer: It is ok to snip those leaves, but it's not necessary. It's up to you, and seen as you're new to this, it would probably be best to just let it do it's own thing and get to know the lady before trying any yield improving pruning techniques.

There's a lot of debate around pruning fan leaves, lower growth and that sort of thing. But we'll get into that in later grows aye.

THRIPS

Could be Thrips or Mites, if it's anything at all, it's hard to tell from the pictures.
Mites aren't visible to the naked eye and thrips are tiny black insects, some with wings, some without. Get out the magnifying glass and examine the back side of those leaves. Thrips also leave a black, oil looking residue (their shite) on the leaves. Mites leave a white, cobweb like substance on the leaves (depending on how bad the infestation is).

Okay,I'll just leave those leaves..

but for the thrips.. I've only seen 1 black one... the rest I see at the larvae stage, and have been trying to kill as many as I can by hand.

Yea mate, killing by hand is always, good... I mean the dead ones aren't guna hurt your plant anymore haha.

Thrips

Thrips are really tiny, but can be seen by the naked eye. Some may have wings and some may not. Thrips reproduce rapidly, especially in tight places. That is what makes them hard to get rid of when using pesticides. The suck the sap right out of your plant with there piercing mouths, which makes the leaves look like they turned white. You can tell when you have thrips by taking a look at your leaves, the leaves will look as if there chlorophyll have been ripped right off the plant. Plants that are damaged can’t be healed thus making it harder for the plant to absorb light. SO if left untreated the thrips will kill the plants. Damage also can be seen by the greenish black specks of there poop they leave on leaves. Also the plants will show silver patchs from scar tissue. Depending on the severity at first, thrip damage might look like spider mite damage untill it increases in damage and then thrips case is for sure when you see the greenness replace with big parts of white.


One good way to repel thrips for those growing outside is to use garlic, this is a good way to keep them away before you get them. The color yellow attracts the thrips and should be advised not to have this color around your grow.. If you already have them using neem oil, and or lady bugs can get rid of them. If the infestation is bad then you need to use biological solution like, pyrethrin-like insecticides. Picture 8 shows thrips damage.
Other Products include:
Chemicals
Hot Pepper Wax,Safer Yard & Garden Insecticide (which can be used right to the day of harvest),GNATROL( used in hydro in the water as well as soil),Doc's Neem Pest Soap,Safer Sticky Stakes,TR-11000 Pyrethrum.

Looks real good but as we like to sleep plants do aswell I would use 18-6 and you plant looks big enough to start flowering (or sexing)

Welcome to the RIU.org community! I like how your plant is looking for being your first time! I would advise in buying two T5 HO flouro tubes (one in 6500k and the other in 3000k). However, unfortunatly your plant looks JUST like my male did. As for your ventilation of open windows and checking every so often, for your first time, if it works do it. Later you need to invest in quick and simple ventilation (pc fans). Just monitor your temps. Although I no longer grow, my box is very cheap, easy, and energy efficient, and did I mention it rocks!? Two T5s, two T8s, 5 6500k 26w CFLs, a pc fan for intake and one for exhaust, little fart fan to move air around plant and viola. Keep us updated!

you should invest in an HPS for flowering. the more lumens the bigger your plant will yield.

I looked at the thread, So since its really early in flowering for me (like 3 days so far i think) if im correct about it being hermie will it change those to flowers? Or will it simply just make them not functional or what? Also where can I get it?

I just got some pics of my nodes... tell me what you think. Also, I'm showing a bit of a leaf problem, curling and drooping... you'll see. Hermie?

first 2 are of what I think is female, 3rd & 4th what I think is male, 5th is leaf problem, 6th is leaf problem + possible male shot, 7th is also leaf problem

The plant has its own charm, I will say that ... kinda cute, isn't it?

I think it is too early still to truely determine the sex. Pics 1-4 's internodal sites looked the same to me, and like my female did (I though she was a male lol). I would give them all a couple more days before deciding to chop any possible males. As for the leafs dropping, that looks like over-watering or too small of a container size. ok , i'll take more pics when the lights come on at 5... They leaves arent dropping, some are like curling inwards and twisting.. :\ the container is big enough.
