The following has been getting kicked around in Springfield for some time. I urge all Illinois residents to contact their local representative and urge them to vote in favor of this bill. Let them know how passionate you are about compassionate care.

Synopsis

Full proposed bill Long read PDF.

This can be a very likely thing for illinois with the proper support.

Well unfortunately if any state could corrupt a compassionate system it will be Illinois... Not to mention Cook county sales tax. *shudders

After it passed the senate in '09 it went to the house where it eventually failed in May '10. It was brought back up again in November 2010 where it only picked up one more vote in favor and failed again. Lou Lang, the bills sponsor, found a loophole to bring it back up for a vote in May 2011 but again it failed this time to only a couple of votes.

My local rep originally voted against the bill both times in 2010, so I contacted him, and he basically told me to fuck off and that he will never vote in favor of the bill. But for some reason he voted in favor of it last year? I don't know what changed his mind but I'm glad something did.

I just read through the synopsis and the amendments and as much as I would love to see MMJ in illinois, I don't think this is the right bill for us. It seems very restrictive. Some might say it is still a good first step, and that it will at least get medicine to the patients that need it most (cancer, palsy, aids) but I think that a highly restrictive bill is counter-productive. A bill like this will definitely be abused very quickly by everyone involved. People who aren't qualified for medical canna will get their hands on it anyways, which will fuel the arguments of the opposition that it is now to "easily available" and that the act has to go. There will be problems with growers growing more than they are supposed to, and 6 plants naturally yields much more than 2oz dry, which is a problem in itself. The state will use the bill as another way to assess fines and penalties where ever it can and more than likely will take advantage of those that are involved and trying to do things the right way. After two or three years under a law like this it is likely to look like it has failed. People will say that it doesn't work and the law will get repealed and the ignorant people of the state will feel confident that it has now been proven that Marijuana must remain illegal. When a government decides to open a door like this one, they really need to make sure they are doing it right.

He probably found a way to make money off of it.

all house sponsors of the bill are from the northeast/chicagoland area of the state. The challenge will be to find support in the southern parts of the state.
