Gnats are an annoyance, but quite easy to get rid of. They will damage the plant in large enough numbers, since they live in the soil and will eventually cause damage to the root system. Raid won't help for long, since there are probably lots of larvae in the soil already, and you will only be killing the adult flies if you remove your plant while spraying.

Gnats normally set up home when your soil is not allowed to dry out properly between waterings, and since you only have one plant, you can probably rid yourself of them by simply not watering for a while. The plant may suffer some stress, but the gnats will die of starvation long before your plant dies of underwatering.

A less stressful approach would be to use a combination of sticky fly traps to catch the adult flies, and a layer of sharp sand (aka builders sand) on top of your soil to kill the larvae in the soil. Combined with a proper wet/dry watering schedule, this will rid you of gnats effectively.

You can also buy products specifically designed to kill them (gnat off, no gnats etc.) but I have never needed these, so I can't say if they are any good.

hey nocturn thanks a bunch man!
Alright growth is good for sophia, working on 7point leaves. shotty is slow but steady.
Temperatures are getting high in the can. like 90-92. so I gotta get more fans, or make an intercooler. other advice?

The larger gnats were gone after the Raid for like a day. then this morning i woke up to 2 gnats flying in my face, and there are 2 little tiny white crawlers in the pot. So im going to get some Neem or + sticky pads tomorrow.

Im concerned about the coloring of the soil. it is yellow and white and chunky, looks like vomit:spew:. Im wondering if its the heat, or are those the gnat eggs, cuz its fucking gross either way.

Ive decided im going to do some LST (round the pot) to try and upp my yield. 2 questions from that:

1.) should I transplant? im using a 6'' pot now.
2.) how soon should I start? im working on 4 nodes now i think

Otherwise you guys let me know what your thinking!

I think you should just let the soil dry out totally completely. I think that is normal for what your soil is doing. I think the color haves to do with a combination of the gnats plus the older soil. As for the temperature, you should make yourself a redneck cooler like i did. I just did that today and man the temperature is down 20 degrees! It makes it a bit more humid though, which should be a problem for your gnats. You could put another PC fan at the bottom of the plants and have it blowing up. That should make life a lot harder for the gnats. Better yet, you could have the red neck cooler blowing air up from the bottom. That would make it hard for the gnats, bad for the soil temperature

Do you like lady bugs, they love gnats i hear, but it is not their favorite food. They love aphids a lot more i hear. Get some lady bugs at a nice pet shop.

I do not think you will need to transplant anytime soon, which should allow you a lot of time for the soil to dry out. If you think it has a lot of stress while drying, try misting the leaves instead of soil. Then when it is completely dry, i would transplant. That seems to be a pretty big pot for a plant that size, but again i am just a newbie, so theres my 2 cents in on it.

NAM

PS. what is LST?

PS. what is LST?
1. Lady bugs are interesting. I didnt even know they sell those in pet stores.
2.Im working on a side panel of 4 alternating comp fans -- 2 pulling in, 2 expelling out.
3. Good call on the transplanting thing
4. LST is low stress training, it basically involves training the main stem to grow in a certain direction to control plant height.
The idea is that instead of the plant going striaght up and having to block light to lower bud sites, you can wrap train it to sprial around the pot and get 2 to 3 times more bud sites and still keep it short.
There are alot of threads on here about it with instructions. interesting stuff

check out this guys grow he does some major LST https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/171809-first-time-pc-case-grow.html

Update: Im moving soon and Im going to be investing in a cabinet for the vegetative stage. Do you guys think I should build one, or buy to alter. Also do you think my can here would be useful for cloning + vegetative or should I just toss it and stick with a single multi-purpose cabinet ?

I dont want to spend more than $80 on the build or buy of the cabinet. give me and idea.:peace:

You could make a really simple build like getting pvc pipe and make a cube frame, then put tarp and sew it with a machine. It would be kind of tent like, but all you would have to do is make it similar to a dresser, and put a precise board on top of the frame, then put a sheet over it. Of course it would be smart if you had fire retardant material like a space blanket. Not all space blankets are fire retardant.

This way you could definatley make it a lot easier on your self if you planned ahead and made good measurements at places you would want to put a fan. Pvc pipe should be cheap, and the tarp should be cheap, and you can get a piece of board from like a junk yard or something. Sewing it would be a must to make it at least a little air tight. Damn why didnt i do this?

Hey it would even be easy to take down, if there was only 12 pipes, and 4 connectors. You could even put a zipper on it. If cheap is the way you want to go, i guess you have to try a lot harder. You could also, make a section where your clones and seedlings can go. Like two zipper entrances or something? Thats the cheapest stealthiest thing i could thin k of right now...... Hah I like being stoned

Just a Pic Update. Still working on my fans, so Ive been leaving the
top of the can off... causing light leakage, but keeping it cool.

Soil is looking better since ive been keeping the cap off. go figure!

My lST has kicked in and its looking good I think. Im trying to get it
to bend slowly now and then once I transplant, Im gonna spiral around
the lip of the pot.

So, enough talking.
Comments appreciated!

Update Tomorrow ppl. The Gnats are officially gone. The Plant has more than tripled in size in 2 weeks. The main stem is getting thicker daily, more leaves are sprouting inbetween the leave-stems. Its looking great. I'm LSTing like an addict. Seriously Im going for super spiral.

Question: I started 12/12 this past week. Should I stop and go back to 18/6 ? or should i just ride it out. This is bagseed, and im not sure what Im working with yet, but im hoping she lives up to her assigned name.

oh yeah, Ive been putting in baking soda and vinegar in a bowl like every 2 days for added CO2, not in the dirt, just near the pot.

comments appreciated. Oh yeah Ive got a drawing for the proto-type stealth closet. will be posting tomorrow.
Peacee

Does any one know if a 20-20-20 fert will be more hurt than help?
I bought it from my local home and gardening shop and it was the only one they had with a equal proportion ( no 12-12-12, I even asked and got this real evil look from the broad) i also bought some 5.00$ hormone powder for cloning, but Im not cloning til I know its a girl. Anybody have any advice? I'd really appreciate it.

SO the 20-20-20 really fucked up the grow. REALLY FUCKED IT UP. See Pics. Every single leaf is yellowing and burned and its all droopy and on the verge of death.

So, Im stopping flowering and putting it back on 24 hrs of light. to try and let it regain strength. For this I have a new cab. that is about the same height as garbage can but wider and easier access.

Can anybody help me out here. I really fucked up and Im trying to save my little girl. Ps The other plant in the pics are the shot glass grow from the beginning that I re-potted.

PLZ HELP

hah, ive never seen a trash can grow before. good idea... we'll see how it works ^_^
bstepp someone actually posted a link to another cannibas friendly site, where someone did a killer can grow before me. So i cant claim first-to-ever. lol sucks.

Anyway, I finally finished wiring the fans to the can and its looking pretty damn good. I also added another 100W Cfl so now Im at 400W total.

Sophia spent 24hrs. in my other grow cab, and regained her strength (after clipping problem spots). So I put her back in the can, with the new upgrades.

** I removed the mylar in the can, because temps were getting WAY to hott, and its been like 92F here the past few days. To replace, I doubled coated white paint inside.

I must say, Im pretty proud of the handy work on my can. The fans are great. I have 2 exhaust fans, and one intake (the smaller in the middle). I did it this way because i open the lid alot, and I figured it would be better to have more exhaust.

Next Im working on an ac unit (I made a thread for its progress), and a carbon scrubber (still planning), for upcoming odor issues.

Just to add, the material the can is manufactured from is really fortunate because you can cut holes out easily for additions as needed.

For those in the US Hope everyone had a great memorial day. :peace:

Yeah Ive been on 12/12 excluding one day when I did 24 hrs of light to help heal damage done by over nuting. It worked, I mean she(hopefully its she) looks a ton better, but ive been on 12 12 for almost 2 weeks now, its just spitting out leaves and branches, lots of clone opps. but no tongues, and no balls anywhere.
