Indoor seedling nursery lighting - outdoor grow

Hi,
I'm going to be starting about 50 seeds and I'm looking for the best and safest (no extreme heat) lights to get the babies going before they go out to the greenhouse. In the past I have used Verilux f32t8vlx natural spectrum bulbs T8 / 5000 Kelvins / 2800 Lumens. What to you kind folks recommend? I would prefer not to spend an arm and a leg since this is just for starting them out. Is there anything I can just add to my existing set-up, or ?

4' tubes work - the fixtures can be a little cumbersome. Are you using a tray something like this for seedlings:



A couple of Cool White 23W compact fluorescent bulbs with a Y adapter would work for germinating seeds:

Ya seedlings don’t need a lot of light whatever you got lying around should be fine.
Once they get 3-5 inches you can bring the light nice and close if your using CFL bulbs or 5ft tubes.

Depends on how much you want to spend. At minimum I'd go with a 4 ft, 4 bulb, t5 fixture. If you're planning on keeping them under the light for a significant amount of time, they'd benefit from a 4ft, 8 bulb, t5. T5s are gentle and plants love them, but you could also use a more powerful light, you just have to be more careful. A 315 CMH grows great seedlings too, and I'm sure any of the decent LEDs work fine too.

Really for seedlings a two bulb t5 is fine, or get a 4 bulb and run two lamps until they grow and then turn on the other two, that’s what I do.

I tried some of these for both clones/seedlings and larger plants and they have exceeded my expectations. For small plants I've used 1 or 2 strips and the 4 shown here are for the veg area in my tent. They can be daisy chained together to easily run from a timer, they come with a variety of cords and clips to hang them.
